BOBBY CAFFIN, BSOE’81, who graduated from the Wichita Falls Campus, lives in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. He has completed one year with the Morehead City, North Carolina Police Department where he serves as Police Chaplain. He is the first chaplain that the department has had. He pastored for 20 years, served 8 years as a bereavement counselor for hospice and 15 years as a hospital chaplain. CHUCK CANFIELD, BM’88, loves being relocated to Texas from Phoenix. When his company merged with ConocoPhillips, he moved to Houston where he is exchange accountant. He bought a house in November in Katy, a Houston suburb. He is working on his MBA degree through University of Phoenix which he expects to complete in December, 2004. He auditioned for and made the Houston Symphony Chorus but his singing is on hold until he completes his degree and he rejoins the Chorus in January. Chuck was appointed as a Chairman’s Club Member of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast and will be representing ConocoPhillips at an upcoming reception for the 2003-2004 United Way Campaign. ROBERT CAREY, EX’83, is on disability and living in Bertram, Texas. He writes that when he was in Wayland, he did not like having to go to chapel every week but is glad that he did, because “that is where I met and accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior.” What a great testimony! ANNE CARTHEL, BS’80, who has owned and operated Sage Mills in Floydada, has sold her gourmet food business to The Mills Company in Tyler. She has returned to the world of education and is teaching English classes at Floydada High School. Anne writes that she is excited about working with kids again and looks forward to a busy year as she begins to study and brush up on her literature and grammar. KEN CASE, BSOE’83, is still with the New Mexico State Police in Roswell. On October 19, three of his rookie officers were getting training in landing medical helicopters at accident scenes. The helicopter crashed and two of the officers were killed and the pilot and the other officer were injured. This event has been a traumatic event for Ken and his other officers and he says that only his faith has sustained him during this time. He covets the prayers of Wayland friends during this time. He is also an adjunct professor at Texas Christian University and will be returning to Salzburg, Austria, this summer to teach in a program there. ERIC CHAFFIN, EX’85, former Program Coordinator of Oklahoma Family Policy Council’s K.E.E.P. abstinence program, is now pastor of Broadview Baptist Church in Lubbock. Eric also spent four seasons in team chaplaincy in the Arena Football league (three with the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz and one with the Lubbock Renegades). He is a frequent motivational speaker and has authored two sports-themed books, “Finish Strong: Tackling Life Head On” and “Pigskin Parables: Eyes on the Prize.” He is chairman of 3:14 Ministries, Inc., an outreach to athletes, student athletes and others. Dr. LON CHAFFIN, BM’80, has been named chairperson of the Department of Music at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, effective June 1, 2005. Lon has been serving as associate professor of music at the Belton, Texas school for five years. His primary teaching assignments in music theory, aural skills, music technology, counterpoint, composition, and arranging. He has also served as set designer and technical director for the opera/music theater program. Lon is a published, award-winning composer, whose work has been performed nationally. His pieces for multiple ensembles premiered the past three years during UMHBs Gala Christmas Concerts. Lon taught at Southwest Baptist University, and served as director of choral activities at both Paris College and Temple College. He earned both his master’s and PhD degrees at Texas Tech. CANDY CHRISTMAS, BSOE’81, who graduated from the Lubbock Campus, is a pilot for Northwest Airlines, based in Detroit. She commutes from her home in Florida. Candy writes, “I was able to achieve this position in part because of my degree from Wayland and for that I am thankful.” She has two teenage children, Britton, a freshman at University of North Florida, and Natalie, an 8 th grader at St. John Lutheran School in Ocala. TIM CLARK, BS’82, is living in Utah where he is executive director of the Utah Idaho Southern Baptist Convention. He visited the Wayland booth during the Southern Baptist Convention in Phoenix in June. Tim also preached during the 100th anniversary celebration at First Baptist Church, Olton, Texas, on June 29. DONALD GIBSON CLARK, BSOE’86, who graduated from the Honolulu Campus, is a missionary-evangelist with Light Ministry living in Palm Bay, Florida. He and wife Karen have five grown sons. Don and Karen attend Calvary Chapel Melbourne, Florida where they are active in Bible Studies and Home Groups. They work with the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America Joseph Project http://wwww.mjaa.org and Friend Ships International http://www.friendships.org bringing Spiritual and material blessings to Israel. Karen and Don were servants with Island Harvest Ministries, a ministry of First Assembly of God Church, Honolulu from 1980 to 1994. This was a multi-faceted Evangelism outreach to prisons, hospitals, senior citizen homes, half-way houses, rescue missions, and street evangelism. In 1994 they felt the call to the foreign mission field and they associated with High Adventure Ministries and were off to the Island of Palau in the south Pacific. Don worked as an electrical engineer for the global broadcast of Christian programming from Palau. Don and Karen also worked with missionaries in the area. From Palau they moved to South Korea where they associated with a local church ministering to US military personnel and Koreans. Their outreaches included street evangelism and Bible studies. (P. O. Mr. and Mrs. RODNEY CLAWSON, EX'85 (ANGIE GONZALEZ, BA'85) live in Gruver, Texas, where she heads up the ESL (English as a Second Language) program for Gruver Independent School District. She is also developing her interior decorating and furniture painting business in her spare time. Rodney is a staff songwriter for Extreme Writers Group, a music publishing company co-owned by Warner Brothers (Time/Warner/AOL) based in Nashville, Tennessee. He spends about 10 - 12 days a month writing and producing songs for country and contemporary Christian music artists. Some of the country artists who have recorded his songs include Phil Vassar, Gary Allan, Buddy Jewell, McBride and the Ride, and Rushlow, who currently has Rodney's first Top 20 radio single, "I Can't Be Your Friend." He has several other songs on records that haven't yet been released. He also has some contemporary Christian songs recorded by Gary Chapman, Jake, Go Fish and is currently writing for a children's project called "Seeds," Bible verse songs set to modern worship music to help kids memorize scripture. All the songs are word for word NIV Bible verses. The project is being distributed by EMI-Christian Music Group and the first 2 CD's should be in Family Life and Lifeway Bookstores in January, 2004. Kevin resigned as head coach of the Wayland Pioneer Basketball team, ending an 11-year stint with the school as player, assistant coach and head coach. Dr. DAVID CLEVENGER, BSOE’87, lives in Glendive, Montana, where he is serving as senior district pastor for Montana Conference of Seventh Day Adventists. He and wife Ayla, a certified nursing assistant who is studying for her RN, have five children and two foster sons: Peter-Ryan, a medic the U. S. Army in Iraq; Thaddeus, soon to leave for the foreign mission field; Hannah, a high school junior; Zephan, a high school sophomore; Sasha, a high school sophomore; and foster sons Austin and Jordan. David recently was knighted as a Knight by the Imperial Ethoiopian Order of Saint Mary of Zion for his assistance with orphans in Ethiopia. He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest slow-pitch marathon softball game of 111 hours and two minutes which raised money for the Navy Relief Society. He has been recognized by American Poetry Association with the Poet of Merit Award and by the National Library of Poetry with the Editor’s Choice Award. David holds the MS in genealogical studies from Lexington University, the MTh in religious studies from Christian Bible College and Seminary, the MA in religious studies from Southern Adventist University and the PhD in ministry and genealogical studies from Lexington University. APRIL WALKUP COLEMAN, EX’82, who has worked in law enforcement since she left Wayland, has returned to school at the Albuquerque Campus as a full-time student to complete her degree. Mr. and Mrs. RANDY COVINGTON, BM'82 (ROBIN, FS) have been back in Russia for about five months after having a stateside assignment for 9 months. They are missionaries serving under auspices of the Southern Baptist Convention, serving with the Small Peoples of the North (SPN). They are excited to be back at home in Russia. They were also excited about some new developments in their work. In January, a team of Russian students were to travel with the SPN team to several northern villages. This team was to present a Christmas concert which included a handbell choir and a vocal ensemble. Another exciting aspect of this trip wasw the fact that the SPN group was to share a concert with a native dance group. This particular dance troupe had been hoping, since the fall, to travel to Village K to present a concert. However, they had no means of transportation so they were to travel on the SPN but where they were to present a joint concer t. The Covingtons were looking forward to welcoming a family of four to arrive and begin helping with their ministry. They had been friends since their Wayland days and after realizing that they were much more, decided to marry. They have 8 children and six grandchildren between them. Mr. and Mrs. RANDY COVINGTON, BM’82 (ROBIN, FS) recently returned to Russia where he serves as strategy coordinator (IMB-SBC representatives) for the Small Peoples of the North. They live in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Russian Far East region of Kamchatka. Both of their children have recently graduated from school: Adam, 22, received a BA degree in broadcasting from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee in May and Corrie, 18, graduated from Brewer High School in Fort Worth. Adam has been accepted to serve as journeyman with the International Mission Board in Moscow, Russia as media specialist and will go to the field in September. He is lead user support technician 3 for University of New Mexico Cancer Research and Treatment Center and she is billing support specialist for University of New Mexico Hospitals. They have three children, twins Britnye and Alex, 18 and Samantha, 16. The Twins are seniors in high school. Alex is in the Army Reserve and was in basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri in the summer of 2004. Ken is active in The West Side Chorale and, as he says, “Old Choir people just keep on singing.” Samantha is also active in choir in high school and last year was awarded the outstanding choral student award for her school. Mr. and Mrs. PERRY EDWARDS, BA’86 (KELLEY GARRETT, BM’88) live in Tyler, Texas and stay busy with their five children. Perry is director of pastoral care for East Texas Medical Center. Kelley is a homemaker and works two days a week as a preschool teacher. Son Jordan, 16, got his drivers license this year and is helping Mom with chauffeur duties. He plans to come to Wayland after graduation next year and excels in drum line, choir, keyboard and was chosen as top Bible and choir student for 10th grade. Joel is 13 and stays busy with choir, student council, piano and youth group activities. He was chosen as top math student last year and was chosen as student choice award for choir. Jon is 11 and in 5th grade. He loves Awanas, playing soccer and swimming. Jesse is 10 and in 4th grade. Last year, he set a school record for the most accelerated reader points and enjoys Awanas, soccer, swimming and piano. Jaydee is 8 and in 3rd grade. She received the award for top language arts student. Besides reading, Jaydee’s time is taken up with her gymnastics team and she is a level five gymnast. Deborah, who never cared for poetry, began writing after the death of her mother and thought she would work on a novel or book of short stories, but she says that “God had something else in mind.” She says that all of her writings are inspired through His influence. After a career spent in hospital management, Leilani went to work for RTKL Associates/EQ International in the summer of 2006. EQ International, located in Dallas, is a nationally recognized medical equipment planning and consulting services company which is wholly owned by RTKL Associates, an international architectural firm. Leilani oversees the procurement department who assists hospitals with the acquisition of construction related capital equipment and all related accounting and report services. JOHN LEWIS, BME’83, after three years as the director of technology at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee, has returned to the classroom to teach middle school band. He is starting his 16th year at Briarcrest. In addition to teaching the three middle school bands, he also works with the middle school praise team that leads in worship for their chapel programs. He enjoys arranging music for the group which includes trumpets, saxophone, and trombone, and is referred to by the kids as a "Christian" Chicago type sound. C. FRANK MAYS, BSOE’89, who graduated from the San Antonio Campus, was due to return home in May after serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was deployed on the USS Harry S. Truman with his aviation squadron, the VAQ-130 Zappers for which he was operations officer. Their mission was to provide Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) for strike aircraft by using radar and communications jamming PODs and the High Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM). Frank is Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, based out of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. When he sent the e-mail to Alumni Services on April 14, he said “We have seen a lot of combat sorties over the course of the last four weeks, but I am glad it came to a relatively quick resolution.” The photo of his aircraft over Iraq was taken on April 13 from the back of a refueling aircraft. Frank and his wife Janet have two children, Rebecca, 4 and Nathan, 2, who are pi ctured at the annual tulip festival in Anacortes, Washington in April. JERRY MIDDENDORF, BSOE’81, who graduated from the Wichita Falls Campus, retired from the U. S. Air Force in 1989 and is living in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is currently a furniture salesman for Gerdt Furniture in Avon. Jerry and wife Cathy have five grown children. In August, 2004, Jerry was diagnosed with cancer and the doctors gave him only 12 to 16 months to live. He chose not to seek chemotherapy or radiation treatments and had many people praying for him. In a checkup in July, 2006, tests showed that the cancer had gone into regression and had shrunk and the areas appear to have healed themselves. Jerry knows that he has been healed through the power of prayer. He would love to share his story and be an encourager to Wayland friends and other cancer patients. She became a licensed professional counselor in July 2002 and is now completing the requirements to become a registered play therapist. DEAN NOLEN, EX’85, completed his Master of Fine Arts in acting at Yale University School of Drama in May, 2000. He immediately moved to New York and began rehearsals for an off-Broadway show called “Tabletop” which ran for seven-months and for which he received a Drama Desk Award. He guest-appeared as Philip Montrose on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and has a small role in an upcoming film called “Igby Goes Down,” starring Susan Sarandon. Dean appeared in a production of “Heaven Can Wait,” with Leslie Uggams at Westport Country Playhouse, the theatre run by Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. He is currently in his Broadway debut as Harry Bright in “Mama Mia!” He is under contract to appear in the show through October 6 at Winter Garden Theatre where “Cats” played for so many years. Dr. CALEB OLADIPO, BA’84, who has been teaching at Baylor University, is in South Africa on a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research on the role of the church in rebuilding post-apartheid South African society. He has been in South Africa since January, 2003, and expects to return to the States in November. Caleb has accepted an endowed chair position at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He will serve as the Duke K. McCall professor of missions and world Christianity. The appointment began on August 1, 2003 and he will begin teaching assignments in January, 2004. DR. DONALD G. PROCTOR, BA’82, MA’84, and wife Debbie have accepted the call to pastor Clover Bottom Baptist Church in Brookneal, Va., after a brief sabbatical where they started and operated a small construction supply company in Richmond, Va. They have two sons, Landall, 25, Director of Student Affairs for Georgetown University and who recently completed a solo circumnavigation of the Lower 48 on his bicycle, and Shawn, 23, who is a sound engineer with a studio in Richmond. Donny and Debbie, who works at American National Bank in Lynchburg and who recently completed her first marathon, would love to hear from former classmates and friends. TIM PRUIT, BA’86, lives in Casa Grande, Arizona, with wife Lori and his children, Heidi, 14, a high school freshman, and Laramie, 9, a fourth grader. Lori homeschools them. Tim is Director of Evangelism and Missions for the Gila Valley Baptist Association. He and Lori were appointed as North American Mission Board Missionaries by the Southern Baptist Convention to fill this position. In May, 2005, he completed three years in the office where he works with 24 churches: two Hispanic, two African American, four Native American, and the remainder predominantly Anglo.
