He is choral director at Eagle River High School and took his choirs to Boston for an international competition. He was named Anchorage Teacher of the Year and received a British Petroleum Teacher of Excellence Award. He also received a "C.R.E.A.T.E" Award for the Mayor of Anchorage (Community Recognition of Educational and Teaching Excellence.) He was named runner-up for Alaska Teacher of the Year for 1999-2000. As such, he was invited to Washington D.C. as a participant in the National Teacher Forum at the Washington Court Hotel. He was accompanied to the Forum October 11-13 by his wife Sharolyn and daughter Samantha, 10. Son Casey, 19, is a freshman at Eastern Washington University. Ron's choir performed at the MENC (Music Educators National Conference)Northwest Regional convention in February. The family spent the spring semester, 2002, in London with the Mississippi College London Semester Program. Tommy assisted in coordinating the program and taught mathematics classes to the 30 MC students in the program. DONNETTA WILLIAMS LIPPE, BA’79, is rejoicing that her son Kyle has returned from Afghanistan safe and sound. He was one of the first Airborne Army Rangers to hit the ground in the war against the Taliban. Donnetta is still teaching in Lubbock at Bean Elementary School and is singing in a group with husband Darryl, daughter Kaci and another couple called “The Country Club.” Donnetta is also in the Texas State Guard and is up for an appointment as a 2nd Lieutenant. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of RON MELNICHUK, BS’77, who died in a drowning accident on August 4, at Shoal Lake in Canada, where he had built his dream cottage. He was an All American member of the Pioneer track team and in 1998 was inducted into Wayland’s Hall of Honor. Ron was a pre-med major at Wayland and after graduation, he chose nursing and completed the bachelor’s degree in nursing at University of Manitoba in 1985 and completed the Intensive Care Program at St. Boniface Hospital in 1987. He worked in both the intensive care surgery and intensive care medicine units. In 1993, he completed the cardiovascular nurse clinician program and worked on the cardiovascular thoracic unit at St. Boniface Hospital until 1997. Ron was an accomplished national team coach for the Canadian Track and Field Association. “His passion for his athletes was matched only by the respect his athletes had for him.” He was a devoted husband to wife Lee and a proud father to his children, Larissa and R. Jay. When Larissa was born, he arranged for 500 pink and white balloons and when R. Jay was born, he had a 40-foot ice sculpture done proclaiming, “It’s a boy!” He supported the children in their school activities. MIAN, BSOE’77, who graduated from the Amarillo Campus, and his company, Mian Horizon Financial Corporation, recently received the Outstanding Merit Award from Hilton Hotels Corporation Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mian Corporation owns the Hilton Garden Inn, Calabasas, California, a focused service hotel serving the West San Fernando Valley. The hotel opened in April 2002 on time and within the projected budget and received the number four position in guest satisfaction within 90 days. Mian Horizon Financial Corporation will soon be breaking ground for a new Hilton Garden Inn in Oxnard, California, with future plans to add more Garden Inns at a second location in Oxnard and an ocean front site in Ventura. Wife Patty is a teacher at El Paso Community College and they have two sons, Jeremy, 23 and Jonathan, 15. Herb is a volunteer coach at the YMCA for basketball, hockey and softball. He is also a writer of youth curriculum for LifeWay Christian Resources (formerly the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.) DOUG MOORE, EX’76, lives in Canton, Texas, where he is sales manager for National Memorial Planning Co. Inc. (NMPC). It's focus is preneed marketing for memorials and caskets. He and wife Susan, who is junior high choral director, have two children, Nathan, who interned for Teen Mania Ministries and is completing his first year of college, and Meredith, a high school junior who hopes to major in pre-med in college. Dr. REBECCA MORTON, BA’77, has been named sales proposal consultant with Datatel, Inc., in Fairfax, Virginia, a company for whom she has worked for since May, 2000. She is working with a small team of consultants who will prepare written answers to prospective clients' questions regarding the Datatel software. The job includes lots of writing and researching the answers for the potential client. This team plays a key role in supporting the Sales Division's efforts to secure new business for Datatel. Rebecca will still work remotely from her home in Lubbock, Texas, and will not travel every week. She will travel to the home office in Virginia occasionally for additional training or meetings.
