Dr. GARY ABERCROMBIE, BS’73, has been named as a Texas Super Dentist by Texas Monthly magazine and Kay Professional Media, Inc. He is a doctor of dental surgery and practices in Plainview where he makes his home with wife JANICE HUDGINS ABERCROMBIE, BA’74. Gary is a member of the Board of the Association of Former Students and is a member of the Wayland Baptist University Board of Trustees. They have three children, Cody, Lauren and Todd. Rev. and Mrs. HAROLD ABNEY, BA’73 (KAY PETERSON, BS’71) live in Lockney where he is pastor of First Baptist Church. Kay is kindergarten teacher for Lockney ISD. PAM AKINS, BA’70, will become the Centennial Governor of Rotary District 7980, on July 1, 2004. She was among more than 500 Rotary leaders from 169 countries gathered in Anaheim, California, February 14-22 to discuss Rotary and volunteerism as Rotary plans for its second century of service. Her district covers the southern half of Connecticut and includes 63 Rotary Clubs. More recently, on April 3rd at the Mystic Marriott in Groton, Connecticut, Akins conducted a district training assembly for over 270 Rotarians from District 7980 in preparation for the upcoming Rotary Centennial Year. Pam, who owns an advertising agency in New London, says, “I’ve been in Rotary since 1987 when Rotary first accepted women members, and I was very proud to represent my club and my district at this International Assembly. I love the fellowship of Rotary and the service opportunities it provides. As Rotarians, we do wonderful things in our communities. And because of our Rotary Foundation, we change and save lives every day all around the world. VICKY J. AMAN, BA’73, has moved to Alexandria, Virginia, after a job transfer to Washington, D.C. She is an investigations analyst with the Department of Health and Human Services Inspector General’s Office. The weekend after her move, she ran into HAZEL STRONG GREENWOOD, BS’73, who was attending a conference in Annapolis, Maryland. Mr. and Mrs. BILL C. ANDERSON, EX’77 (VICI PIRTLE, BA’77) live in El Paso where he is Assistant District Attorney for El Paso County and is Chief of the Rape and Child Abuse Section. Bill is also a board member of the Advocacy Center of El Paso. Vici teaches gifted and talented eighth graders at Morehead Middle School and continues to teach private piano. She sings with the El Paso Chorale and recently directed “Bye-bye Birdie” at her school. In the summer she is the drama director for the Cultural Arts Academy where she directs four Shakespearean plays. They have two children, Zack, 22 and Tori, 19. Tori performed in the Rocky Horror Show at University of Texas/El Paso this fall and Zack plays bass guitar and sings in a couple of bands in town. Mr. and Mrs. MARC APPLEWHITE, EX'77 (GLENNA JONES, BA'77) have moved to Monahans, Texas, where Glenna accepted a position as assistant superintendent of school for Monahans ISD. Marc is educator for grades 5 and 6 technology. They are members of First Baptist Church. The Applewhites had previously lived in Olney, Texas for 21 years. Glenna completed her master of education degree in mid-management at Tarleton State University. They have two children, Micah, an engineer for Motorola, who lives in Grapevine with wife Shawna; and ASHLEY, BM'04, who is a December graduate of Wayland who is in her first year as K-12 music teacher and band director for Spur Independent School District. C.J. ARD, EX’76, lives in Fort Lupton, Colorado, and is still experiencing severe health problems. He was in the hospital recently for a heart catherization and they found three arteries that were between 85 - 90% blocked. They have removed C. J. from the heart transplant list because too many major health problems. He has started a computer generated newsletter called "Hillbilly’s Fireplace," an inspirational, chatty publication. C. PATTY NICHOLS ARNOLD, BA77, lives in Wewoka, Oklahoma, where she is encumbrance clerk in the Wewoka Public Schools superintendent’s office. She has worked there for 22 years. Patty has four children including, Cristen, who is married and living in Wichita, Kansas; Allison, a sophomore at Oklahoma Baptist University; Monica, a sophomore at Wewoka High School; and A.J., who is in kindergarten. GERALD ASKEW, BS’71, is working on his master’s degree in theology at Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology in Dallas. He is known as building manager, artist, student, teacher, father and mentor at SMU where he is officed in the Hughes-Trigg Building. Gerald began pursuing his theological degree after feeling called to the ministry and debated over the decision for a year and a half before deciding it was the right choice. After graduating from Wayland, he earned his master’s in clinical and counseling psychology from Texas Tech University and moved to Dallas to serve an internship with the Dallas County Mental Health and Retardation Center. After completing his degree at SMU, Gerald Askew hopes to remain at the school for a year and intern in the SMU chaplain’s office. Eventually, he would like to become a university chaplain himself. He loves working with students and has taught at Brookhaven College and Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. Gerald has been working at his church for five years and also trains under a pastor at Highland Park United Methodist Church. In addition, he serves as an advocate for the elderly and handicapped and participates in a prison ministry. At first he did not want to visit the prisons, but “you can’t stop me now!” he says. For 10 years, he has been encouraging the youth and advising them of their options, such as college, for when they are released. Gerald has been raising money for a trip to Brisbane, Australia, where he will represent SMU Campus Ministries and the Office of the Chaplain at the International and Interfaith University Chaplains Conference. One of his efforts of the creation of a beautiful floral piece, “Texas Harvest,” a preserved rendition featuring everything from peppers to roses and tulips grown in Texas. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Rev. HARRY A. BABBITT, BA’74, who died on January 2, 2005. He served as pastor of Normandale Baptist Church in White Settlement, Texas, a suburb of Fort Worth, and South Georgia Baptist Church in Amarillo before assuming the position of Pastoral Care Leader at Amarillo’s Paramount Baptist Church where he served at the time of his death. Harry had been on dialysis for several years. Among his survivors is his wife, SHELIAH McANEAR BABBITT, BA’78, and three sons, Aaron, Jarrod and Trevor. DAVID BARNES, BS’71, is spending more time on the Wayland campus than usual. His two sons, Jonathan David and Will are both students. Jonathan is a sophomore and Will is beginning his freshman year. Jonathan has not yet declared a major, but Will intends to study engineering and is playing JV basketball for the Pioneers. David is married to the former Debbie Burrow and the couple also has two daughters. Lauren is a sophomore at Tulia High School where she plays basketball. Kaitlyn is an 8th grader. LA VELDA NORRISS BARRICK, EX’76, has spent the last 23 years teaching theatre and English and is presently the Pre-AP coordinator for Burkburnett (Texas) Middle School. She and husband Martin reside in Burkburnett with their son Sam, a senior at Burkburnett High School. La Velda and Martin are avid walkers, runners and cyclists . She has been involved the last few years as secretary of the BHS varsity tennis and soccer booster clubs and is looking forward to becoming more involved with community theatre and watching Sam play soccer for West Texas A&M next fall. Mr. and Mrs. LEON BEARD, BA’77 (BEVERLY HYDE, EX’77) live in Houston where he has returned after being deployed with the U.S. Marine Reserves in December, 2002. He was activated with his rank as Colonel to perform a special project for the Marine Forces Reserve headquarters in New Orleans. The project was to consolidate mobilization-related inspections from three separate operations into one organization. Shortly after being activated, the Iraq situation escalated such that many of the headquarters personnel re-focused their efforts to supporting troop build-up and recall of the reserve force. As he was returning to Houston from his active duty, he got a call from Boeing who offered him a job in their Houston operations. He is contract administrator supporting NASA's Space Shuttle program. The focus is to manage the existing contract as well as any changes requested by the customer (NASA). They primarily deal with the technica l support needed to maintain, launch, and control (in orbit) the shuttle fleet. Bev works for Baytek International, a software and services company which serves the chemical and refining industry. They have two sons. Matt graduated from Baylor in August, 2003, and Ryan works as a carpenter/remodeler. He plays and sings with a group, Shark Attack, a reggae band. Mr. and Mrs. LARRY BISHOP, BS’70 (EMILY WINTERS, BA’70) are retired and living in Indiana. Larry is helping his brother with his 5000 acre farm, driving a tractor to prepare for planting. He also drives a tank truck for the local grain elevator, hauling liquid fertilizer to the floater spray trucks. He also tries to find time to exercise and do some woodworking. Larry has recently built a toy box for a granddaughter in Florida and two bedside tables for her mother. The Bishop’s two grandsons live just 20 minutes away and come over as often as possible. They love to help granddad in the workshop and recently helped him build a car and an airplane for them. Emily stays busy with adult Bible Fellowship and with her parents. Her mother lives with them and they make regular trips to the nursing home to visit her father. LEE BROWN, EX’75, is associate professor of strength and conditioning at California State University Fullerton in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science. He and his wife moved back to California for him to take the job in August, 2002. Last year, it was discovered that Lee had cancer and he had a bone marrow transplant from his sister and is now cancer free. Lee would love to hear from Wayland friends. BENNY BURNETT, BS’79, is high school principal at Harrah, Oklahoma, after coaching high school girls basketball for 15 years. He was recently inducted in the Oklahoma Girls’ Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In his 15 seasons, he took his team to the state tournament 10 times with a record of 338 wins and 89 losses. He won the state championship in 1993 and was state runner-up in 1987 and 1991. He was chosen as an All-State coach in 1982 and was voted to coach the Oklahoma-Iowa all-star game in 1992. Benny had 10 girls who made All-State and two who received All-America honors. He served on the board of the Girls’ Coaches Association for seven years. Benny and his father, also a former coach, are the only father and son to both be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are one of only three father and son coaches who have both won a state championship in Oklahoma. Benny’s wife teaches a third grade comprehensive class at Harrah Elementary School and they have two children, Brenna, 10, and Braeden, 7. JIM CARLISLE, BS’77, is in his third year as counselor at Coppell High School, a suburb of Dallas. He has been a school counselor for seven years. Wife Traci, to whom he has been married for 19 years, is a certified public accountant. Jim is currently the officials’ certification chairman for the Southwestern Association of USA Track and Field, the largest number of certified officials in the United States. He is also an International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) certified Area Technical Official (ATO), one of only 8 in the United States. KENNITH "KEN" CARTER, BS'71, has moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he is associate pastor of education/administration at Judson Baptist Church. He moved from Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock and his pastor there also moved to Judson. Judson recently purchased the Tammy Wynette Home which is next door to the church and they now have 19 acres. The Wynette home is being converted to a youth center and Bible study outpost. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of JACK CHENEY, BS’76, former member of the Pioneer Track and Field Team, who died in El Paso on September 10, 2006. He had taught in the El Paso school system for almost 30 years.
EUGENE CHISM, BA’71, a former Pioneer basketball player, has been involved with several philanthropic organizations for the past 20 years and has served as operations manager for McKesson Drug Company and for APAC Telecommunications Corp. “Gene” was elected second vice chairman to the Iowa-Nebraska Chapter of the NAACP for three years. He was the first black appointed by Iowa’s governor as Commissioner of Mental Health and was vice chairman of the Standards Committee. His most recent appointment was by the mayor of Bettendorf, Iowa, as civil rights commissioner for the city. Employed by the local school district, he works with at-risk students who have behavior problems and also markets his own invention of a shower moisturizing system that treats persons with dry skin problems. He retired from playing basketball last year. He volunteers for the Democratic Party and is on the steering committee to elect Barack Obama as president. His wife, Elaine, is a dental assistant. APRIL WALKUP COLEMAN, EX’78, BSOE’05, completed her degree at the Albuquerque Campus in May. As she said, “I did it on the 25-year installment plan!” She has worked in law enforcement for many years and is moving back to Nevada where she lived for 20 years before moving to New Mexico. She is really excited about this move back to Nevada and starting her new life. BILL COLEMAN, BS’72, has been appointed as director of the adult probation department in Plainview. He and wife Tammy moved to Plainview in May. JOE COOMBES, BA’71, is completing his 22nd year as minister of music at First Baptist Church in Burkburnett, Texas, where he lives with wife Sherry. Dr. STEVE COULTER, BA’78, is a physician in private practice, OB/GYN, in Fort Payne, Alabama, where he has been located for 8 years. He says that he is happy being a small town doctor since his patients are friends and neighbors. He and his family are active at First Baptist Church where he teaches high school Sunday School, attends Centrifuge with them in the summer and takes them skiing. Steve is a pilot and hopes to come to Plainview soon. He and wife Sonia will celebrate their 28th anniversary in August. TERRY DITTBERNER, BS’77, lives in Austin and wrote to inform Footprints of the death of his wife, CARLA MEYER DITTBERNER, EX’80. Carla died May 12, 2003, after being a cancer survivor for 20 years. Diagnosed with lymphoma in 1983 after the birth of her second child, Carla, had a year of chemo and radiation in both Stanford, California, and in Amarillo. Within a year, the cancer returned and she went to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, for a bone marrow transplant. The cancer never returned but in the last few years, Carla had some health problems due to the treatments. Her one request of God was that she be able to see her children grown. She got to enjoy the wedding of daughter Tammy in October. Terry and Carla had lived and were members of FBC in White Deer for 20 years before moving to Austin in 1997. She was very active with the choirs and was the church secretary in White Deer for 14 years. Two former pastors at White Deer officiated at the service, CALVIN WINTERS, BA’84, and HAROLD ABNEY, BA’73. Carla’s father, CARL MEYER, AA’44, sang at the funeral. The three songs that Carla had requested were ones that she first heard from KEITH LONGBOTHAM, BA’75, during a revival at White Deer shortly after she was diagnosed with cancer. In addition to his “real” job, he serves on the city’s Human Relations Commission, the boards of Meals on Wheels, Crime Stoppers and Wee Care Child Center, and is an ex-officio member of the Plainview-Hale County Industrial Foundation board. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of CARROLL W. HUDGENS, BS’76, who died on March 19, 2002 in Lubbock. Carroll had retired in March 2000 after serving for 36 years with the Lubbock Police Department. At the time of retirement, he was with the homicide division. Carroll had been appointed Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. Among his survivors are his wife, Beth, three sons and a daughter.
DARREN HUFFTY, EX’79, is a software consultant and lives in Florida and travels a great deal in his job. He and wife Ann have three children, James, Hilary and Sedona and are active at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He has accepted a position as director of worship, music and the arts at Village Seven Presbyterian Church. Ric recently completed his Doctor of Worship Studies (DWS) with the Institute of Worship Studies, based in Florida. The Hunts are building a new home and are using the church address for now.
