Rev. and Mrs. JOE T. NAYLOR, BS'57 (NADENE FORMWAY, EX'59) live in DyersburgTennessee, where he retired in April, 2000, as director of missions for Dyer Baptist Association. He held this position for 18 years after serving for several years as pastor of four churches in Texas and western Tennessee. Nadene retired in June, 1999, as elementary school teacher in the Dyersburg school system. She had taught for 30 years. The Naylors have three married children and 8 grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. TOM NESBITT, BA’59 (MARIE, EX’59) returned to the states after serving in Instanbul, Turkey and ministering in all of central Asia for two years. The Nesbitts traveled with Life Action Ministries for three years and then served with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for two years. They have returned to Iowa where he has taken a part time staff position with Cornerstone Church in Ames. He will deal with pastoral care and counseling. His first responsibility was to speak at church in the park on August 31, 2003, and more than 1000 attended and stay for the picnic lunch. Son Troy is the senior pastor at the church which was begun 10 years ago as an extension of Tom’s church. They now average 1500 in worship services. In addition to Troy, the Nesbitts other two children are also involved in ministry. Daughter Amelia is pianist at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Ames where Tom served as pastor for over 21 years. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of RUTH CANNON NICHOLS, BS’55, who died on May 6, 2005, in Littlefield, Texas. She graduated from Cotton Center High School in 1951. During high school she was named Most Outstanding Player her junior and senior years. She was named to the all-tournament team of every tournament that Cotton Center competed in. She played basketball for the Flying Queens where she established an all-time scoring record by a single player of 2,159 points and held that record until 1987. Helping the Queens gain early prominence in women's basketball, she could hit a hook shot with her right or left hand. She was selected All-American for three years while helping lead the Flying Queens to a 90-5 record and two National AAU Championships. In 1955, she played in the Second Pan American Games in Mexico City, Mexico. She was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985 and into the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. In 1992, she was inducted into the Wayland Athletic Hall of Honor and in April 2000 she was selected as one of the 100 Sports Legends of the Panhandle. MAE STEPHENS ORRICK, BA'52, lives in San Antonio where she is retired. She lives in a retirement home, Timberhill Villa, and loves it. She writes that there are always activities going on with arts and crafts, movies, shopping trips and dinners out. RANEAL IVEY PERRY, BA’58, and her husband, Gene, have moved to Plainview. He was pastor of Westport Baptist Church of Cleveland, Okla., for 19 years. Jolly was an outstanding member of International Choir when she came to Wayland from Hawaii. Lavern had been educational superintendent of Adventist schools in Hawaii and Arizona and had also served as educational counselor at Aiea (Hawaii) High School. He had pastured churches in Hooks, Tulia, Midland and Texarkana, in Texas, and in Kansas City, Kansas. Jesse attended Ouachita Baptist University before transferring to Wayland. He attended Midwestern Baptist Seminary from 1959-1962 and earned his MDiv degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1973. Among Jesse’s survivors are his wife Eva Nell and three children.

She was a former Flying Queen and taught in the Brownfield Independent School District for 36 years before her retirement. Dr. IRA C. "ROCKY" POWELL, BS'50, is retired and living with wife Elinor in Columbia, Missouri. He was minister of music for a number of churches in his career and was choral director at University of Missouri. Rocky completed his master of sacred music degree at Southwestern Seminary and his doctor of music education degree at University of Oklahoma. Mr. and Mrs. BRUCE RICH, BA’54 (BILLIE, EX’51) are retired and living in Albuquerque. Bruce retired from IBM in 1982 and since then has worked for Scantron and DeVry Institute. He was ordained to the ministry in 1953 at Arney Baptist Church by George Ray, Glenn Mather, Dr. Robert Dobson, Dr. Theodore Boushy, A. L. Shaw and Bob Bratcher. Bruce pastured churches in Robertson, Texas and Waldport, Oregon before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and then returned to Oregon where he was a teacher, principal and superintendent and bi-vocational pastor. In 1966, he became a salesman for SRA, a subsidiary of IBM, and worked for them until he retired in 1982. Bruce was named the outstanding employee of 1973 at SRA-IBM, the award given at a meeting in San Francisco which carried with it a nice bonus and an expense paid trip to Acapulco. Since that time, he has pastored and served as interim at Datil, Estancia and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bruce and Billie are members of First Baptist Church, Albuquerque, where he teaches a men’s Sunday School class and works with the Senior Citizens’ Group. Billie has worked and supported Bruce in his ministry for 57 years. They have four children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bruce earned his MEd at Oregon State University in 1964. In 1990-91, he served in Washington, DC on the United States Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Bruce and Billie have experienced some health problems. She has undergone chemotherapy for lymphoma which she completed on February 20 and he has worked through colon cancer. They hated to miss Homecoming in February. He was a longtime pastor, serving churches in Wellington, Lubbock, Roscoe and Colorado City, in Texas and four years in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. and Mrs. HARLON REECE, BA'58 (MILDRED "MIDGE" KELLEY, EX'57) live in Herndon, Virginia. Harlon retired from a career with the U. S. Marines in 1978 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His career included a tour of combat in Vietnam. In 1996, he retired from a second career as vice president in charge of east coast operations for a computer software firm. Since then, he has been active in local civic and government activities and he was elected to the Herndon Town Council. Harlon was asked to deliver the keynote address for the annual Herndon MemorialDay ceremony. Midge is a psychotherapist. They have two grown sons. She is active with the Hale County Literacy Program, is a member of the Advisory Council for Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, Hospital Auxiliary and Friends of Unger Library. Minnie Ruth is a Soroptimist Woman of Distinction and won the Community Builder Award from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas. The Riglers are active in the Presbyterian church. Dr. DANIEL J. “DANNY” RIVERA, EX’59, has decided to take early retirement from Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary. He served the institution as president for 13 years and after resigning, later returned to help the school as vice president for institutional advancement. His resignation was effective on May 23, 2002. Dan will devote his time to the establishment of centers for theological education in regional parts of Mexico, and he is excited about this new phase of his life. Mr. and Mrs. AL ROYER, BS'50 (THEO, FS) are retired and living in Knoxville, Tennessee. Al served as president of his senior class at Wayland and pastored for two years the County Line Baptist Church near Abernathy. Theo was Dr. Bill Marshall's secretary and receptionist before taking over as registrar when Evelyn Burgess had to resign because of health. After his time at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, Al pastored churches in Knoxville and Shelbyville, Tennessee, and West Palm Beach, Florida. He retired in 1988 and moved to Knoxville, near his two sons, Philip and John. The Royers enjoy their sons and daughters-in-law and their four grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. SAM SATTERFIELD, BA’59 (YVONNE HAGER, EX’61) live in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville. Sam owns and operates an international group travel agency, Satterfield Cruises and Tours. Yvonne teaches special education for the Williamson County Schools. The Satterfields are members of ClearView Baptist Church in Franklin where they are active in the Praise and Worship Choir, Ukraine Mission Committee and Sunday School. Sam is taking a group to Grindelwald, Switzerland in September, 2005, for a 9-day vacation with a Christian plus. ALYCE JOYCE TIPPIE SMITH, EX'50, is a retired teacher and coach and lives in Iowa Park, Texas, with husband Bob who is retired from the telephone company. Christian love and sympathy to Dr. and Mrs. VERNON STOKES, BA'59 (BELVA RAMSEY, BS'60) who lost their daughter Shauna Sanderson, 38, to cancer. The faith exhibited by Shauna, her husband Brian and the entire Stokes family was inspiring and unbelievable. They faced it with grace and faith and took it day by day for an 18 month confrontation. People from all over the country and around the world prayed for Shauna and her family daily. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of HAZEL FORTE STRICKLAND, BS’52, who died on June 16, 2005. After Wayland, Hazel completed her MEd degree from Texas Tech University and completed advanced graduate studies at Oregon State University, University of Colorado, University of Wisconsin and New York University. She was an educator in Plainview, Odessa, Canyon and Odessa Junior College. Her experience in Elementary Education took her to the Education Service Center XVI in Amarillo to help develop a model for all Service Centers in Texas. Her last years prior to retirement were at Canyon Independent School District as head of the Special Education Department, she retired in 1974. CORRINE COOK SHIELDS, BA’55, of Abilene, also wrote that she took a course that Hazel taught in children’s literature at Wayland when Corrine was a senior. Hazel was listed in Who's Who in American Education, was president of Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading, was named Outstanding Teacher for District VII, was a member of Federated Women's Club and many more. Among her survivors are her husband of 71 years, two daughters, a sister, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Dr. and Mrs. DAN STRINGER, EX’51 (HARRIET ROGERS, EX’49) have been honored by the trustees of Golden Gate Baptist Seminary by the establishment of the Stringer Award for the graduates of the seminary’s Arizona Campus. The Dan and Harriet Stringer Award will be presented annually to students of the Arizona campus who show significant perseverance in attaining their seminary degree. Dan was an instrumental leader in establishing the seminary’s campus in Arizona in 1995 when he was serving as Executive Director of the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of PAT TATE TRUELOVE, who died on May 5, 2005, in Amarillo. A native of Oklahoma, Pat came to Wayland to play for the Flying Queens, earning AAU All-America honors in 1951, and later playing for the Georgia Peaches, a semi-pro basketball team. For several years, she was involved in the National Women’s Invitational Tournament in Amarillo in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. She was the 34th member inducted into the Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame in 1974. Among her survivors are her husband Kenneth and a brother and sister-in-law.
YVONNE WAKEFIELD, BA’57, is retired and does volunteer mission work. She has recently returned to her home in Dimmit, Texas. For the past 10 years, she has spent five to six months each year in Nageezi, New Mexico where she does Vacation Bible Schools, backyard Bible clubs, works with senior citizens and church groups who come in the summer to help with Vacation Bible Schools. On her recent trip, she met a Code talker, interviewed him and is currently helping his grandson write his story. During the summer, Yvonne attended the wedding of DANIEL CLYMER, BA’91. Rev. and Mrs. WINFRED WALKER, EX’51 (MARY JANE HALL, EX’51) have moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Dumas, Texas. Winfred retired on January 1 as pastor of Highland Baptist Church in Albuquerque and they moved to Dumas to be near their family. Everyone lives in the Dumas-Sunray area except for one grandson. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of PATSY ANN TAYLOR WHITE, EX’50, who died on June 9, 2003 in Sherman, Texas, where she lived with her husband, L. T. WHITE, BS’50. After leaving Wayland, Patsy completed her undergraduate work at West Texas State in Canyon before earning her masters degree in library science from East Texas State University in Commerce. She served as librarian for 19 years at Grayson County College, was a life member of The Friends of The Sherman Library and was a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International. Patsy taught children’s Sunday School and was church librarian for many years at First Baptist Church in Sherman. In addition to her husband, Patsy is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, a grandson, and four sisters including LURA TAYLOR SMITH, EX’47. AL WILSON, BA’52, and wife Janet are retired and living in Desert Hot Springs, California. He is a longtime minister of music in churches in Texas—including College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview—and the northwest. They moved to Desert Hot Springs from Portland, Oregon. Elie pastored churches in France and in Louisiana before joining the staff of Louisiana Baptist Convention. He served as Language Missions Director and was the voice for the French Baptist Hour for 33 years. Glenda worked as administrative assistant for 23 years. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of VERA DEAN WOFFORD, BA’59, who was killed on December 1, 2005. Mrs. Wofford was crossing the highway to get her mail when she was struck by a car in front of her home. She was an avid volunteer and supporter of the arts in Plainview and in West Texas. Mrs. Wofford was editor of The Traveler Golden Anniversary edition in 1958.
BILL WOODARD, BA’54, and wife Nell work almost full time with Texas Baptist Men doing volunteer construction across the country. They spent the summer building student apartments for the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary in Cochrane, Alberta. They wrote that the weather was beautiful and the Canadian Rockies were still snow covered in June. Bill is a retired electronic engineer with Federal Aviation Administration.
