DOROTHY WEBB ALBRECHT, EX’55, is retired and lives in Burleson, Texas, in the house where she has lived for 36 years.  She enjoys her four children, 9 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.   Dorothy retired from the Postal Service in 1996 and has suffered a stroke and has had a series of brain and scalp operations.  She is almost whole but has some problem with the fingers on her left hand.  She has a page on the internet and teaches Bible interpreting from the original languages.  She would love to hear from Wayland friends.  Dorothy has included a copy of an original work of art by Wayland student MISAKO HIRABI NAGASHIMA, BA’55, who is deceased.  (619 Todd Court, Burleson, TX  76028  E-mail:  dotalbrecht@sbcglobal.net)

Mr. and Mrs. J. TRAVIS ALLEN, EX'54 (GLADYS PIERCE, BS'50) are retired and living on a farm in Artesia, New Mexico. Both were teachers for many years and he was a bi-vocational pastor. JOHN H. ALLEN, BA'55, lives in Granbury, Texas, and is director of mentoring at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. CARMEN PATE ANGEL, EX’53, is retired and living alone in Hereford, Texas at age 90.  She attended Wayland when she and her husband Bill, who died in 1972, were closing a business in Plainview.  Wayland had a good photography teacher and they decided that they would become photographers.  When they completed the course, they knew that Plainview had several good photographers so they relocated to Hereford and established their business.  Following Bill’s death, Carmen continued to run the studio until she got her son through college in 1982.  She writes that she remembers her Wayland days with gladness and appreciation for what she learned and the new friends that she made.  (425 Sunset Drive, Hereford, TX  79045  E-mail:  meta1@mailstation.com)

Wedding bells will be ringing on June 16, 2007, for BEVERLY BUSH ARRENDELL, BA’59 and BEN BAGWELL, BA’59.  The small wedding will be at First United Methodist Church in Arlington, Texas with family and close friends attending and will be performed by Dr. Charles Wade, Executive Director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.  Beverly was married to Dr. CHARLES ARRENDELL, BA’59, former Wayland director of public relations, who died in 1989.  Ben lost his wife Jane to cancer.  Beverly and Ben each have two grown children.  After the wedding, the couple will be at home in Hopewell, Virginia.  (Beverly:  5 S. Mr. and Mrs. JERRY ARRINGTON, BS’60 (JO STEELE, EX’62) have moved from Pampa, Texas, to Pagosa Springs, Colorado. He is serving as minister of education at First Baptist Church and they are enjoying their new home. The Arringtons attended the Southern Baptist Convention in June and attended the Wayland Alumni and Friends dinner. They went home by way of Sedona, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley in Southern Utah. Mr. and Mrs. GEORGE ARTHUR, BA’59 (GWEN BARRETT, BS’60) have decided to keep on “RVing” for awhile longer. They had planned to settle down in Farnham, Virginia, but “wander lust” got the best of them. During the fall, they were in Florida at The Baptist College of Florida and left there to go to Tucson, Arizona, to work with a food/clothing ministry. George helped renovate present buildings and build a new one for the ministry to expand. This organization sends food and clothing all over Southern Arizona and into Mexico. They also own an orphanage in Mexico. The Arthurs spent Thanksgiving Day with Mr. and Mrs. KEN FLOWERS, BA’60 (MARGERY WHITTEN, BA’60) and had visited with Mr. and Mrs. HAROLD BRANTLEY, BA’61 (JACQUE THOMPSON, EX’60) while in Florida. BOBBYE CASEY BEAN, EX’52, lives in Silverton, Texas, with husband Walter, a retired farmer. Bobbye retired after teaching second grade for 30 years. They have three sons and 8 grandchildren. Bobbye received her BBA degree from Hardin-Simmons University in 1952 and her MEd from West Texas State University in 1976. She serves as substitute organist and pianist at First Baptist Church, Silverton, where Walter is a deacon and she teaches Sunday School for her ladies’ age group. Dr. and Mrs. WELDON BECKNER, BS’55 (BETTY FARR, BA’55) still live in Waco, Texas, where he is professor of educational administration at Baylor University. He has recently had a book published, “Ethics for Educational Leaders,” by Allyn and Bacon. The book developed from a new course which Weldon designed. Currently, he is responsible for developing a proposal for new graduate programs for school administrators. Weldon and Betty have moved into a new home which they had built on a golf course and he writes, “We offer a terrific ‘bed and breakfast’ and invite visitors from our Wayland past.”

Dr. and Mrs. ED BILLINGS, BS’52 (LaVAYE ROYE, BS’59) are retired and living in Lampasas, Texas. They recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They were married on July 3, 1952, at First Baptist Church, Borger, with Dr. Bill Marshall, then president of Wayland Baptist College, presiding. The Billings celebrated for a few days at the Galveston Hilton with their four children and spouses, their 8 grandchildren and two adopted foster grandsons. The main event was at their daughter’s home in Houston where a three hour meal and a “roast” of the past 50 years. Each child and grandchild participated with a musical selection, a poem, an ode, a ballad or a blessing written just for Ed and LaVaye. The group presented the couple with a new computer. On July 4, events continued with a neighborhood parade and a big cookout with the friends and families that the Billings’ children had grown up with in Houston. On a recent trip to Temple, the Billings went on to Belton to visit the campus of University of Mary Hardin Baylor. That is the location of the cremains of AILESE PARTEN, former director of public relations at Wayland, who was a dear friend of Ed and LaVaye. Under a red oak tree near the Sesquicentennial Plaza, is a beautiful bronze memorial plaque that states, “This tree is given in memory of Miss Ailese Parten, Class of l925. Her love will always be felt as this tree grows to provide shade and comfort to the university family. Thanks be to God for this generous and caring woman. February 7, 1996” (208 S. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of ROY BOLES, BA’51, who died on February 25, 2003. He was 87. Services were held in Plainview with his grandson by marriage, SCOTT GREENE, BM’87, presiding. He moved to Plainview in 1946, graduated from Wayland and worked in the maintenance department from 1954 until his retirement in 1981. Roy was an ordained Baptist minister. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. AUDREY BOLES, BA’50, registrar emeritus of the university. VIRGINIA BOWERS, BA’68, retired in December, 2002, after 34 ½ years in education as a teacher and school librarian. She retired from her position as school librarian with the Muleshoe Independent School District. Virginia writes that she loves retirement and is spending her time traveling and has started a business making handcrafted greeting cards for a specialty shop in Muleshoe. EUGENE BRAGG, BA’50, is retired and living in Livonia, Michigan, with wife Nanelle. He served 29 years with the Home Mission Board and Baptist State Convention of Michigan as missionary among the many language groups. When he retired from that position, he served as part-time director of missions in Southeastern Association for seven years. Eugene is now serving as interim pastor as needed. During his Wayland years, Eugene made his profession of faith at College Heights Baptist Church and his favorite teacher was Mrs. Warren who whetted his appetite for all phases of English. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of WILLIAM J. “BILL” BRYAN, EX’51, who died on May 31, 2001. Among his survivors are his wife Barbara, four children and two grandchildren. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. EDGAR BUNNELL, BA’57, who died on October 28, 2006.  He had earned his MS in education from Ohio State University and his PhD from the University of Michigan.  Edgar was professor emeritus at University of South Alabama.  Wife Jeri survives him in Mobile.

VELMA UMPHRES BURCH, BS'50, is a retired high school English teacher. She and husband Doyle, a retired chiropractor, live in Murphy, North Carolina. Velma is active in her church as has served as interim choir director, soloist, choir member and Sunday School teacher. Velma writes that "I have a deep secure feeling of attachment to Wayland that has never waned since that day near graduation when I made the remark that I wished I could stay at Wayland. I felt so good there and I loved it so much. But Mr. Shanklin said, 'Velma, Velma, it's time to try your wings!' God is so good to have allowed me to go to Wayland at such a time. AUTREY BARRON BURKE, BA'50, is a retired teacher and lives in Amarillo with her husband, Andrew. She taught for 32 years and Andrew was supervisor of the technical writing section at Pantex. They have four children and four grandchildren. (4407 Andrews Avenue, Amarillo, TX 79106)

MARY ANNE ALLEN BURK, BA’58, and husband Dean live in Littleton, Colorado, where he has retired as pastor of Arapahoe Road Baptist Church. Mary Anne is working part time for an insurance agent whom she has known for a long time. During the year, they were in Oklahoma for Dean’s 50th high school reunion, and the retired minister’s conference at Glorieta, New Mexico. They also attended high school graduation for their oldest grandchild in Texas and flew to Wisconsin to visit their son and two grandchildren. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of ARGUS BURNETT, BA’51, who died on September 13, 2005.  While at Wayland, he taught history and Bible and began serving as pastor in several Baptist churches after graduation.  Argus served as director of the Amarillo Baptist Association for 1957 to 1966.  He became the first director and developer of the Potter-Randall Community Action Corporation in 1966 and served in that capacity for 18 years.

Mr. and Mrs. JOHNNY BURNETT, BA’53 (BARBARA EVANS, EX 66) are retired missionaries enjoying life in Yuma, Arizona. There is a small town atmosphere with small city facilities. They write that their health is good and Johnny’s is the best that it has been for two or three years. They take their medicine, eat properly (most of the time), exercise and walk. The Burnetts enjoy being near two of their son’s families and they all gather for Thursday dinner almost every week. They are active in West Yuma Southern Baptist Church where son Bret is pastor. Barbar teaches 3rd and 4th graders in Sunday School and is part of the ‘Agape girls’, and helps with AWANAS. Johnny sings in the worship team and is the Adult Age Group Leader. Dr. and Mrs. CLYDE CAIN, BA’58 (KAY ARCHER, BA’58) live in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he is retired from the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. He serves as coordinator of the Southwestern Seminary off-campus program at Oklahoma Baptist University and also teaches for the seminary. He had pastored churches in Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia. He was employed by the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board where he served for 23 ½ years, retiring in 1997 as associate vice president in the Evangelism Division. Mr. and Mrs. KEN COFFEE, BA’57 (MARTHA BROWN, EX’54) have moved to San Antonio from Dallas. Ken retired from his position with the Baptist General Convention of Dallas as associate director of the State Missions Commission, after 45 years in full-time ministry. He plans to spend his retirement years in a consulting business with his son, San Antonio-based attorney Blake, to help churches build healthy relationships and mediate differences. At a retirement celebration in Dallas on May 17, Ken was presented the Distinguished Service Alumni Award from the Association of Former Students. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Rev. KENNETH COLEMAN, BA’56, who died on March 2, 2005.  He had recently retired as pastor of Hastings Baptist Church in Hastings, Oklahoma, where he had served for 12 years.  He had served in the ministry for 52 years.

Dr. and Mrs. CLAUDE CONE, BA’59 (JEANNIE MILLER, EX’57) live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Claude retired in the spring as Executive Director of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico. Jeannie is battling Parkinson’s Disease and in the fall of 2004, Claude discovered that he had prostate cancer and later found that he also had cancer of the bladder. After chemo therapy in Albuquerque, he went to M. D. Anderson in Houston for surgery. In May, he attended graduation at the Albuquerque Campus and looked and felt fantastic. GLORIA HARMER COX, BA’55, retired from teaching/coaching at the end of the school year in 2003. Except for a seven year period when her girls were young, she has taught for 41 years, the last 25 in Paris, Texas. She loved it and will miss her students but now has more time to enjoy her grandchildren. Daughter Lauri McIntosh has two boys, 10 and 6, and lives in Allen, Texas with husband Todd. Daughter Julie Galiga has two girls, 4 and 2, and lives in Austin with husband Todd. Both of the daughters have also been teachers but are currently stay at home moms. Gloria’s husband Mark retired from teaching 10 years ago. They live about seven miles outside of Paris on five acres of land and enjoy the peacefulness. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. TRUMAN CULP, EX’53 (RUTH PIPKIN, EX’52).  Truman died in 1997 and Ruth died on September 1, 2005.  They lived in San Luis Obispo, California.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of REBECCA “BECKY” CLARK CULPEPPER, EX’53, who died on March 24, 2005. During her one year at Wayland, Becky traveled 1100 miles with the International Choir. She later graduated from Baylor University School of Nursing in Dallas. She earned her masters degree at Tennessee State University and taught in several schools of nursing over the years. In 1994, she retired as assistant professor in the school of nursing and assistant hospital administrator at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Among her survivors are her husband, four children and 9 grandchildren.

LEILA "CINDY" BOHNER CURTIS, BA'50, is retired and living with husband Ed in Columbia, Missouri. She was a school teacher in Norman, Oklahoma, and for many years in Columbia before her retirement. FLORA FAVER DAVIS, BA’51, has a new address in Buckeye, Arizona. She sold the house that she and her late husband, SID DAVIS, BA’50, had lived in for 38 years. RUBYE WINEGEART DAVIS, BS'50, was an elementary teacher for 31 years and is now retired in Pampa. She is active in her church where she has served in a variety of positions including department director, handbell choir, sanctuary choir and senior adult choir. She is president of Kappa Kappa Iota, vice president of Retired Teachers and volunteers with Meals on Wheels. CHARLES T. “TOMMIE” DAY, EX’51, was married on June 6, 2002, to Helen Prickett, a retired missionary that he met at church. Helen served for 18 years as a missionary in Southeast Africa and for 12 years in Trinidad and the Caribbean. They met at Village Baptist Church where she teaches English as a second language to international students. Tommie is a retired air traffic controller and has served churches as minister of education and administration. Tommie was married to MARY LU RECORD DAY, EX’51, who is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. ROYCE DOWELL, BS’52 (WILMA WRIGHT, BSOE’82) have moved from Dallas to McKinney, Texas, where they have built a new home and downsized a bit. Wilma retired from her position as minister of children’s music at First Baptist Church, Richardson about 8 years ago and is enjoying decorating the new house. Royce has come out of retirement again and has accepted a full time position as a loan officer at AAA WorldWide Mortgage in Dallas. He still sings with the Singing Men of Texas in the North Central Group which has 80-100 men. They sing concerts about 8 times a year. Royce and Wilma have joining First Baptist Church of McKinney. Dr. MARVIN DOWNING, BA’55, retired in mid-2003 at the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM) after 34 years tenure as history professor. His 40-year teaching span started at Wayland where he started as instructor in history in 1963. For much of the last 10 years he was the UTM Interim History-Philosophy Department Chair. Upon his retirement, his colleagues gave him a gift card to the Bass Pro Shops which he used quickly. The UTM chapter of the national honor society Phi Kappa Phi recognized him in April, 2003 with its meritorious service award. Mrs. Downing is the government documents librarian at the UTM Library. Marvin chairs the city agencies, Martin Beautiful and the Martin Historic Zoning Commission, and does volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and We Care Ministries, a local Goodwill-type organization. In early 2004 he rotated off the Tennessee Baptist Historical Committee of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. The Downings enjoy keeping their 19 month old granddaughter. He served as director of buildings and grounds at Wayland from 1967-1986. Among Rose's survivors are two daughters and a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. KENNETH DUCKETT, EX'64 (CLETA b She also had 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Three grandsons, MARTIN DUCKETT, EX'82, RONNIE BRUMLEY, EX'79 and DONNIE BRUMLEY, EX'80, attended Wayland. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of DOYLE REX DUNCAN, BS’52, who died on July 27, 2002. He was a retired technical writer who lived in the Houston area.

Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Rev. Dr. ERNEST E. DYKES, EX’51, who died on August 11, 2005.  Dr. Dykes was one of four students who integrated Wayland in 1951.  He was licensed to the ministry by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in 1953 and served as pastor in Lancaster, Waxahachie, Dallas, Van Alstyne, Sherman, Bonham, Lewisville, Cleburne and Grand Prairie, all in Texas.  Dr. Dykes was named Presiding Elder of the Fort Worth District in 1989 and served for seven years.  He retired for one year and was asked to serve a church in Sulphur Springs for five years before reentering retirement.  Among his survivors is his wife, Dr. Betty C.
