Joe was a great friend, supporter and alumnus of Wayland. He was a frequent participant at Homecoming and always attended the Wayland festivities in conjunction with the Baptist General Convention of Texas which he frequented. At Wayland, Joe was active in singing groups and played basketball and football. After attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, he served as minister of music in several Texas churches. He later was a sales representative for A.B. LUCILLE MALONE BAILEY, AA’33, and husband Milton are still going strong in Houston even though she is approaching her 90 th birthday and he has already passed his. They were serving actively in their church until September, 2002. Now they are members of Second Baptist Church and enjoy their pastor and the exciting worship services so much. Lucille has been experiencing some back pain and has had three injections even though her doctor has not told her if he has determined the problem, “nerves, arthritis or old age!” They would love to hear from Wayland friends. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of RUBY SHARP BUCKNER, AA’35, who died on November 6. She and husband Raymond were retired and living in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, near their son. Ruby had written that after reading the last Footprints, she was flooded with memories of Wayland during the 30’s when she sang in the College Quartet with Dr. George Stokes. President George McDonald would take them to area churches and schools to sing and recruit. Ruby was also asked to speak to the Southern Baptist Laymen’s Conference on “Why I Like Wayland College” and copies were distributed to all high school graduates in the region. “I feel that I played a role in Wayland’s survival during those trying times of the Great Depression,” Ruby writes. Henry earned his BA from Louisiana College and his Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He pastored churches in Texas, Louisiana, Washington, and California. As a bi-vocational pastor, he worked in Social Services for the state of Washington and was a Social Service Supervisor in Sacramento California for 11 years. At the time of his death he was living in "Assisted Living" in Riverside California because of health problems. THERESA OLDHAM DILLARD, AA’38, lives in Belen, New Mexico. She has enjoyed a life as a homemaker, civic leader and gardener. She and husband J. owned a grocery store for 30 years. She was employed by the House, New Mexico school system for 18 years. An avid gardener recognized for her beautiful gladiolas, she served for seven years as co-editor of Gladiolas Magazine. In addition to gardening, Theresa enjoys doing needlework. She taught and adult Sunday School class in her church for over 30 years. MAEBELL WILSON EVANS, AA’39, is retired and living in Waco, Texas. After Wayland, she earned her masters degree in English and education at Baylor University. She taught for two years in Rosebud, Texas and the next 18 in Waco. She then spent an additional 13 years as a supervisor in the Waco Independent School District and taught and supervised the Adult Education Program. JAMES B. FOX, AA’36, has been honored by Western New Mexico University with the naming of the University Athletic Complex in his honor. He coached track, served as assistant football coach and taught mathematics at the university from 1948-1976. He met his wife Myrna the day that he arrived at WNMU to complete his bachelors degree which he did in 1939 with honors. Coach Fox has been coaching track for over 70 years and is currently head of the Votress Running Team which is composed of young boys and girls from the community in Silver City. The Silver City High School track field is also named for Fox. He has been named Citizen of the Year for Grant County and is in the NAIA Helms Hall of Fame for Track and Field. EDNA RUTH JOHNSON GREEN, EX’34, retired in 1978 and moved from Dallas to Benton, Arkansas. She taught school in Brownfield, Texas, for a number of years and writes that she is happy to be a Wayland alumnus. She and husband Morris are both 91 and enjoy their retirement. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of D. CLYDE HAMILTON, EX’38, who died on February 23, 2006, in Bastrop, Texas. He left Wayland to enter the U. S. Navy during World War II and returned to Plainview to begin his career in municipal tax appraisal. Clyde later purchased Southwestern Appraisal Company in Austin in 1972. After he retired in 1987, he moved to Bastrop where he was pressed into service as chief appraiser for Kenedy County and served as a property appraisal examiner for First National Bank in Bastrop. Among Clyde’s survivors are his wife of 66 years, Louceil, two daughters and sons-in-law, and four grandchildren and their spouses, and 9 great grandchildren.

After retiring and moving to Valley Mills, he served as director of missions for the Bosque Association from 1995 to 2005. THELMA JO HAMILTON POTTS, AA’37, is retired and living in Levelland, Texas. After Wayland, Thelma Jo earned her bachelors degree at Baylor University and her master’s degree at Texas Tech. Her husband was a pastor and she supported him and worked in the church along with her long teaching career. After “retiring” 27 years ago, Thelma Jo did volunteer work in the inner city of Houston with Mildred McWhorter’s program and then taught school in American Samoa for two years under auspices of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. After returning to Levelland, she returned to teaching and taught English as a Second Language (ESL) until last year. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and tries to walk a few miles each week. ORESSA HEMBREE SHERMAN, AA’23, celebrated her 100th birthday on June 22 with a family celebration in Florida. Oressa recently moved to a private residential facility near her daughter. Among those celebrating will be her two daughters, Dr. Billye Taylor, of Florida, and Lanette Sullivan of Texas, six grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. Margaret was a substitute teacher and worked in the officers of the high school and junior high in Hereford, Texas for many years. From 1967 until she retired in 1985, she was an abstractor for Service Abstract and Title in Lubbock. Among her survivors are three children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lorena lived in Logan, New Mexico, where she taught school for many years, retiring in 1978, and was a member of Logan Senior Citizens. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of Dr. GEORGE STOKES, AA’36, who served as president of his class, and former faculty member at Wayland. After serving in the military, George completed his master’s degree at Baylor and returned to Wayland where he served as chairman of the speech department for three years. He joined the faculty at Baylor University in 1953, earned his PhD from Northwestern University in 1954, and returned to teach at Baylor where he was professor of specch and radio, in charge of radio and television until his retirement in 1984. George served as the “Voice of Baylor” for 26 years. In 1986, the Association of Former Students at Wayland presented George with the Distinguished Leadership Alumni Award. George had served the Class of 1950 as Class Sponsor and attended their Golden Anniversary Reunion during Homecoming 2000. He sang with a quartet from that class for Homecoming festivities. Christian love and sympathy to the family and friends of LEILA FRANCES MILLER THOMPSON, AA’37, who died on August 9 in Fort Collins, Colorado. She taught elementary school art for two years before taking training in occupational therapy at Mills College. She worked in Army hospitals and was commissioned in the Women´s Medical Specialist Corps. In 1954, Frances resigned her commission at the rank of captain and accepted an appointment to teach occupational therapy at Colorado State University. She moved to Fort Collins in 1955. She served as director of the Volunteers Clearing House from 1967 to 1984 and earned two masters degrees from Colorado State University. An avid volunteer, Frances served two terms on the Larimer County Board of Health, worked with various adult education committees and was involved in the development of Care-A-Van, Home Helps and other community organizations. She was a volunteer with the Fort Collins Read Aloud program from 1990-1996. She was honored with the Florence Sabin Award, the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and the Distinguised Service Alumni Award from the Wayland Association of Former Students in 1987. Martha was a homemaker and mother and helped her husband, Robert, with his farming, ranching and trucking business. He died in 1992. Martha was a devoted wife and dropped out of Wayland to marry. She was always proud that she was able to attend Wayland but never expressed regret about quitting school to marry. Among her survivors is one daughter, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

DORIS TIDWELL WEAVER, AA'34, lives in Los Osos, California. She lost her husband, DANIEL WEAVER, AA'34, in 1998. Daniel was a minister for 68 years. Doris taught school for five years but had a career as a homemaker and mother. She looks forward to each issue of Footprints and says that she reads practically every word. EVELYN MALONE WOOD, AA’37, is recovering from a fractured hip, a siege of pneumonia, a mild heart attack and a possible light stroke. She is recuperating at the home of her daughter in Montgomery, Alabama. The daughter, a Registered Nurse, and son-in-law, a chaplain, are transferring to San Antonio in August, 2005, and Evelyn will be coming with them.
