NEW VICTORY BELL

Dr. Paul ArmesWayland cheerleaders Trevor Ward and Jennifer King stand on the new Victory Bell recently constructed by Keith Weiland on behalf of the Association of Former Students. The old train bell was taken from a dilapidated wagon, polished to a high shine and given a new home aboard a trailer painted in school colors. The trailer is adorned by two Wayland Baptist University logos featuring large W's; two jackrabbits designed by Rodney Watson, director of the Museum of the Llano Estacado, as a throwback to the university's original mascot; and the last three words of the Fight Song: "On To Victory...." The bell debuted at the annual Cowboy Days Parade in September and has been used at soccer and volleyball matches this fall. "We wanted to restore some tradition and we're very proud of the victory bell and trailer," said Danny Andrews, director of Alumni Development. At the start of school, freshmen received a laminated card with the words to the Alma Mater and Fight Song. Cards also will be distributed to other members of the Wayland family during basketball season.
