CAMPUS SAFETY
SAFETY AND SECURITY DISCLOSURE
2008
Wayland Baptist University is deeply concerned about the safety and security of its students and employees and strives to maintain the safest possible environment. However, the absolute safety of any particular individual cannot be guaranteed. Because safety must begin with the individual, you must take the responsibility for your own personal safety.
During business hours, crimes should be reported to the University Police 709 Xenia Street, and/or to the Dean of Students in McClung University Center, room 204. Crimes may also be reported 24 hours per day by contacting the Plainview Police Department at 296-1182. All emergencies may be reported by dialing 9-911 from a campus extension or 911 from any off-campus telephone.
Campus security is provided by off-duty commissioned law enforcement officers. There is a campus police office (709 Xenia Street) which is available to all students. These officers make regular patrol of the campus from 6:00 pm until 3:00 am and consist of checking and securing all campus buildings, including residence halls. Access to secured buildings must be gained through the building manager or his/her supervisor. The officers enforce campus rules and regulations and report to the University Police Chief. These officers operate with full authority as is allowed by law.
Nine dormitories are maintained on campus for resident students and are open for limited visitation. Visitors must respect specific visitation hours.
University residence halls have staff on call 24 hours per day and 7 days per week when school is in session with limited staffing hours during the summer.
There is no curfew for residence hall students. Doors to all residence halls are locked at 11:00 pm each evening and each resident has a key which permits access. Dormitory operation is under the supervision of the Dean of Students.
University apartments are available to a limited number of students who meet requirements to live off campus and are periodically patrolled by campus police officers. Students who elect to live off campus and who do not reside in Wayland housing have a number of places to choose from, some of which may provide security. However, students who live off campus are ultimately responsible for their own safety. The university does not provide security in any way for off-campus students, nor does it recognize or sanction off-campus organizational meeting or housing facilities.
The University publishes an annual crime and safety report, which informs students and employees of crime statistics and provides information concerning campus security procedures and personal safety. Additionally, mailings are made to the campus community and notices are posted periodically which contain information regarding safety and security. Through printed materials, chapel, and other educational programming and individual contact with students and employees, the university encourages prompt reporting of all campus crime to the University Police and Plainview Police Department.
Wayland Baptist University prohibits the use of illegal drugs or alcohol. Wayland forbids the possession, use or distribution of illicit drugs and/or paraphernalia and alcohol by students and employees. Further information may be obtained by consulting the substance abuse policy on file in the Student Development Office. Drug and alcohol abuse programs are made available through programs and publications of the Student Development area.
Firearms are strictly prohibited at Wayland, except by commissioned peace officers.
In accordance with the Clery Act, a web site listing registered sex offenders in Plainview is available: www.familywatchdog.us , follow the instructions at this website to obtain information on registered sex offenders.
Materials promoting awareness and prevention of rape, acquaintance rape, and other sex offenses will be periodically distributed to students, faculty and staff. Additionally, varied educational programming will be offered including dorm staff training, chapel programs, etc. Possible sanctions for rape, acquaintance rape, or other sex offenses, as well as procedures for campus disciplinary action are covered in the campus disciplinary policy. Any sex offenses should be reported directly and immediately to the University Police and to the Plainview Police Department. Institutional personnel, in cooperation with the Dean of Students office will assist the student if requested. Preserving evidence of the offense is of the utmost importance. Victims of sexual offenses may seek counseling through the University Counseling Service. Options for changing academic and living arrangements precipitated by sexual offenses should be pursued through the office of the Dean of Students.
