Art Class in Community Classroom
Facilitating interest-based personal enrichment and tutorial services for adults in Plainview and the surrounding area



  • A+ Certification Course: Operating System: Offered at Lubbock Campus; Cost includes textbook and exam following the class.  The second half of a two-part certification program, this portion covers working with computer operating systems. The class is open to any individual age 16 or older with a familiarity with a computer, keyboard and mouse. Students should possess a general working knowledge of Windows XP operating system.

  • Art Trek for Kids : Fee includes all materials. For children in grades 1-4, Art Trek provides instruction in clay, paper mache, porcelain, pastel, tombow pen, and watercolor/gauche and a visit to the exhibit at the Abraham Art Gallery.

  • Cake Date with Etta: Etta Gilbert, area veteran cake decorating specialist, provides instruction in cake decorating. The training occurs on four Monday evenings, 6:30-8:30. Call 291-3650 for schedule, fee, and registration information. Next classes begin January 7!

  • Citizenship Tutorials: Tutorial services are offered for anyone seeking instructional assistance in preparation for the U.S. Naturalization interview and exam. The services are for adult students who have their Permanent Residency. Students are paired with a volunteer tutor, and the student and tutor meet 1-2 hours weekly for lessons.  Students pay only for the instructional materials.   • CPR & First Aid: David Hughes will walk participants through the processes of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and First Aid. A great class for parents, teachers and anyone working in the public.

  • Comedy Defensive Driving: Participants must attend both evenings to receive credit. These sessions are scheduled monthly.

  • Conversational Spanish: This class is offered twice weekly, 6:30-8:30 p.m., and runs for 10 weeks each semester. 

  • ESL – Intermediate Level: These courses are designed to teach spoken and written English to limited-English speaking adults. Participants can expect to receive small-group and individual instruction in integrated reading writing, listening, and speaking as well as basic computer instruction. The instructor is Lynette Bowen, well-known area ESL specialist. For information, call Bowen at 296-7310.

  • Floral Design Workshops: These are one-evening workshops that occur once in the fall and once in the spring. The presenter is a Texas Master Florist and popular area floral designer. Participants learn new ways to design seasonal florals for tablescapes, Christmas trees, wreaths, walls, vase, and pot arrangements. This is a demonstration class, but participants are welcome to bring their own materials for design consultation.  Call 291-3650 for schedule, fee, and registration information.

  • GED Tutorials: Tutorial services are offered for anyone seeking instructional assistance in preparation for the GED tests. Students must be at least 18 years old and not enrolled in public schools. Students are paired with a volunteer tutor, and the student and tutor meet 1-2 hours weekly for lessons. Students pay only for instructional materials. Call 291-3650 for registration information.

  • Knit for Kids: Supplies extra. Plainview’s Knit and Purl Girls will teach participants how to create a basic sweater for the Knit for Kids Project, a Guidepost initiative for clothing refugee children. Participants will be provided a short supply list. If you’re looking for a way to use your hands for sacred work, this is for you, even if you’ve never knitted or sewn.

  • Literary Lunch Bunch: Monthly, Noon - 1:30 p.m.; No charge. This is a fun, non-threatening brown-bag discussion facilitated by Wayland’s Michael Summers and designed for adults who enjoy a wide range of reading interests. Call 291-3650 for the schedule and list of books to be discussed.

  • Opera: The Human Voice: Mondays, beginning Jan. 14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.; $50. Join  business professor Dr. Shelley Tapp on a journey through the various vocal ranges of opera,exploring the human voice in this specially trained setting. Sessions will involve listening to arias and discussing the works.

  • Poverty Training for Teachers: Fee includes three workbooks. Based on the work of Dr. Ruby Payne, the workshop provides area teachers 18 hours of professional staff development. Instructor is Debbie Stennett.

  • Poverty Training for Agencies: Fee includes textbook. Based on the work of Dr. Ruby Payne, the workshop is led by Debbie Stennett and explores the hidden culture of poverty and how to work with persons from that culture.

  • Quilting - Traditional Handpiecing: This class is designed to teach the traditional craft of making quilts through handpiecing, including skills of selecting, marking and cutting fabric, designing quilt patterns, binding and piecing sections for a quilt top. Final produt is a six-block lap quilt.

  • Volunteer Training: The Community Classroom utilizes the assistance of volunteers to provide GED and Citizenship preparation instruction. In addition, the Classroom houses the Hale County Literacy Center which also uses volunteers to teach basic literacy skills to adults. Most tutors and volunteers meet 1-2 hours weekly for lessons. Volunteer training sessions are offered twice annually. Call 291-3650 for additional information.

  • Computer Bytes: Computer classes are offered in a one-on-one setting for individuals to receive personal attention and help on their level of need. Sessions are for two hours and are set up according to the student and instuctor's schedules. Further sessions are determined by the student and instructor based on the student's skill needs.  Classes available in this format include the following:

  • Access: What’s a database and how do I create one? Students can expect to learn how to create and use a database; sort, filter, and conduct queries from a database; use the mail merge function; and create forms and reports from the database.

  • Computer Bytes: Beginning Computers (Windows): How do I turn this thing on anyway?!?  This class starts with the very basics of computer literacy. Students can expect to learn (1) how to boot up the computer and (2) how to navigate in the computer world. Students can also expect to learn how to (1) display files and folders, (2) name and rename files, and (3) use the HELP and SUPPORT options (Windows XP and Office 2003).

  • Computer Bytes: Beginning Digital Photography:  Instructors will walk participants through the basics of taking photos digitally and working with them in the computer. The class will help participants better understand how their cameras work, shooting and how to transfer and store images.

  • Computer Bytes: Intermediate Digital Photography: The instructor will explore using software to enhance and refine digital photographs.

  • Computer Bytes: Excel: Students can expect to learn how to (1)create an MS Office Excel workbook, (2) enter and edit text and numbers, and (3) add and delete columns and rows. Also features lessons of formulas, functions and calculating and using charts and customizing them.

  • Computer Bytes: File Management: Participants learn how to work with files on the computer for ease in access.

  • Computer Bytes: Outlook: Students will navigate the email software and all its various programs, including contact lists, calendars and other aspects.

  • Computer Bytes: PowerPoint: Help—I need visuals for my presentation! Students can expect to learn the basics of creating a simple computer-based slide presentation, as well as how to (1) apply art and animation schemes, and (2) print presentations.

  • Computer Bytes: Publisher: How can I create a professional-looking document for my business? Students can expect to learn how to create newsletters, brochures, business cards, etc. and receive guided instruction in projects.

  • Computer Bytes: Quickbooks: Participants will learn basic bookkeeping and accounting using the Quickbooks software.

  • Computer Bytes: Word: What’s a document and how do I create one? This class covers the word processing progra, from such basic skills as creating, saving, opening, and editing documents to adding flair, using settings and using tables and columns.
