Speech Requirements
The following courses (37 hours) are required for teacher certification:
SPCH 1301 – Speech Communication
SPCH 1302 – Interpretation and Performance of Literature
SPCH 1303 – Professional Communication
*SPCH 2302 – Communication in the Classroom
SPCH 2303 – Public Speaking
SPCH 3301 – Communication in Small Groups
SPCH 3302 – Advanced Interpretation
SPCH 3306 – Argumentation and Debate
SPCH 4301 – Persuasion
SPCH 4330 – Communication Principles and Practice
MCOM 1301 – Introduction to Mass Communications
Select four hours (maximum of three repeats each) from the following two courses:
SPCH 2101 – University Readers
SPCH 2102 – Forensics
* Three hours are included in the general education core curriculum
Professional Education – High School Teacher Certification
In addition to the general education core and preparation in the teaching field, all high school certification programs require a professional education sequence. The professional education sequence provides students with knowledge of the learner, the teaching-learning process, effective teaching strategies, classroom management strategies, and reading in the various content areas. It also provides a structured program of field experiences beginning with classroom observation and ending with student teaching. Students must have taken and passed the basic skills test upon completion of EDUC 3301 – Principles and Practices in Education and before taking further professional education courses.
