Born in Buna (Jasper County) Texas, Dr. Owens is a graduate of Wayland Baptist College (B.A. 1971), Baylor University (M.A. 1973), and Auburn University (Ph.D. 1983) with majors in history. She has been on the faculty at Wayland since 1974 and was elected teacher of the year five times. She has won the Sears Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her specialty areas include: Texas, Civil War and Reconstruction, American women's history. Dr. Owens has published in the fields of Baptist history, oral history, and handbooks for teachers.
