DR. ANN STUTES


Dr. Ann Stutes

Dr. Ann Stutes serves as Academic Dean of the School of Music. She holds the Shaw Music Professorship. In her seventeenth year on the Wayland faculty, Dr. Stutes coordinates the music theory curriculum in addition to her administrative duties.

Dr. Stutes holds degrees from Southwestern University, Northern Illinois University and Texas Tech University. She plays the viola, violin, handbells and sings in the church choir. Her research interests include the pedagogy of music theory, particularly teaching theory to undergraduates; the integration of theory knowledge and skills throughout the entire university music curriculum; and developing critical thinking skills for study and for life.

In addition to her teaching and administrative work on the Wayland campus, Dr. Stutes represents the School of Music in the Texas Association of Music Schools, the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Society for Music Theory, and the National Association of Schools of Music. She is a visiting evaluator for NASM and serves on the Commission for Accreditation. She serves on the Plainview Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, works with the Wayland FRIENDS OF MUSIC, and is a volunteer with the Plainview Covenant Hospital Auxiliary.
