This list is provided to help you keep track of what needs to be completed BEFORE student teaching can take place. See next page for further details.

Completed all English courses with GPA of 2.0
Completed all Math courses with GPA of 2.0
Filed a degree plan with registrar by completion of 60 hours with yearly update
Completed all EDUC and MUSI methods courses

Completed a minimum of 30 music field experience hours documented in the following courses: MUSI 3310, MUSI 4342/4343, and MUSI 4321/4323

Completed Teacher Education Application with Autobiography
Approval of TEC Committee
Completed Student Teacher Application with Philosophy

Completed Piano Proficiency Exam
Completed Senior Recital

Complete EDUC 4318 (Becoming a Teacher in Texas) and taken the PPR Practice TEXES Exam at least once or students cannot receive credit for student teaching
*NOTE:  Students cannot take EDUC 4318 until accepted into the Teacher Education Program 

*Completed Senior Seminar MUSI 4001 and passed PRACTICE TEXES Music Content

*Pass the TEXES Music Content Exam before student teaching

 

*Special Note: MUSI 3310 (Elementary Methods) must be taken before taking EDUC 3301(Principles & Practices). With permission from Dr. Buford or Dr. Mosteller, the two classes may be taken simultaneously

Music Education – Detail

  • Coursework for English and Math should be completed as early as possible
  • During your sophomore year (BEFORE the completion of 60 hours), file degree plan with the Office of the Registrar
  • Begin education course sequence with EDUC 3301: Principles and Practices in Education. This course is a prerequisite for all education courses for music majors but can be taken concurrently with MUSI 3310 in Semester V
  • Complete Teacher Education Application program during MUSI 3310. THIS FORM, WHICH INCLUDES AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY, MUST BE TURNED IN DIRECTLY TO YOUR MUSIC EDUCATION COORDINATOR (Vocal-Buford, Instrumental-Mosteller). Forms and instructions are available from Dr. Buford or Dr. Mosteller.

Minimum Required Grade Point Averages

  • Overall GPA of 2.7
  • A grade of C or better in all English and Math courses.

Reading TAAS ≥ 89 TAKS(ELA) ≥ 2200 SAT combined score ≥ 1070 with minimum of 500 on verbal ACT composite score ≥ 23 with minimum of 19 on English Accuplacer ≥ 90 THEA ≥ 260

Math TAAS ≥ 86 TAKS ≥ 2200 SAT combined score ≥ 1070 with minimum of 500 on mathematics ACT composite score ≥ 23 with minimum of 19 on mathematics Accuplacer ≥ 80 THEA ≥ 230
