Why Graphic Design

Looking for a career that is both artistic and challenging? Graphic design is a creative visual arts profession that applies skills from a wide range of disciplines toward original and innovative design solutions.  As a graphic designer, you will explore the convergence of aesthetics, communication, and everyday life and contemporary culture through image and text.

Why Wayland?
At Wayland, we treat graphic design as more than just a degree in visual communication.  We see it as a combination of art, craft, and performance.  For us, design is about giving substance to ideas and making meaningful connections with viewers.   We do this through hands-on learning, allowing you to get the practical, real-life experience you need to succeed in the field.

Your Resources
In our state-of-the-art facilities you will gain experience using the latest software and newest technologies available so that you are career-ready when you leave.  But, we also treat technology as a means to design, not the end in itself.  In Wayland’s design program you will be trained not only in graphic design and design history but also in correlative disciplines and media including: illustration, printmaking, digital photography, and typography.

Your Future in Graphic Design
Graphic design is a rapidly growing field. According to data published by the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, jobs related to graphic design have grown nationally from roughly 142,000 in 2002, to just over 286,000 in 2008 and the field is expected to continue to grow over the next ten years. The national median wage for graphic designers in 2010 was $43,500, although careers in design are often springboards for other marketing and media related vocations, such as Art Direction, which often pays over $80,000 per year.

A Higher Education
At Wayland Baptist, we combine instruction in graphic design with teachings in Christian missions and ethics, informing you about social consciousness and responsibility.  We believe that it is important to equip our students not only intellectually, but spiritually for a life in an industry that has a direct impact on the culture around us.
