Posting Class Materials

Whether you are ready to post now or not, it will help you to open your Blackboard course at this point and follow along. Click here to go to the Blackboard site. You will bring up a separate window. You can size this window from which you are reading and the Blackboard window so you can switch back and forth between them. In the Blackboard window, click the Login button. Then enter your username and password and click Login. Select the name of your course in order to go to the welcome page for that course.

Placing your materials on Blackboard is pretty painless. Your Blackboard course has a default setup which includes numerous links in the menu on the left side. You can select which links are used and what they say by clicking the Control Panel link (bottom of the menu). Under Course Options (bottom left) you will select Manage Course Menu. Here you can remove unneeded links, modify them (to change th ename or make unavailable), or add new links. When you have made your adjustments, and clicked the OK button at the bottom, you can return to the Control Panel and begin posting.

Whether you are posting assignments, lectures, or other course materials, use folders to organize the items into the modules you developed. From the Control Panel, select the area to which you are posting, say, Assignments. You are given the option of adding a single item or adding a folder. Select the folder option. You can name the folder, e.g., Textbook exercises, and supply a description, e.g., "Refer to your textbook to find these questions." Click the Submit button and the OK button. Now you can click on the folder name to add items to it, such as Session 1 "Answer the even-numbered questions on p. 34." Keep adding items to this folder until you have all the Textbook exercises posted. Now go back and add a new folder, e.g., Discussion Board Questions.

You can set up tests in Blackboard which may be accessed online. These can be password-protected if they need to be proctored. (See the Blackboard manual for details on setting up tests using the Assessment Manager.) For proctored tests, it is the students' responsibility to line up a proctor, but it is your responsibility to supply the information necessary for proctors to do their job. The easiest way to get this information to the proctors is to send it to the Virtual Campus office. We will pass the information on to the proctors. Students need to know all but the password; for Blackboard password-protected tests, the proctors will need to know the password.

When students take online assessments, the grade is automatically entered into the Blackboard gradebook. You can add categories for other types of assignments. From the Control Panel click on Gradebook, then Gradebook Settings. Choose Manage Gradebook Categories to display a page which allows for the addition of new categories. If you need to simple add a new item to the gradebook, from the Gradebook page, click the Add Item button. It is wise to categorize your assessments (e.g., homework, projects, weekly assignments, discussion board responses, etc) prior to adding them to your gradebook. This will make weighting of assignments and entering of grades easier. See the Blackboard manual for complete details on setting up and maintaining the gradebook.
