I.B. Definition of the Online Course

SACS defines distance education as "a formal educational process in which the majority of instruction occurs when student and instructor are not in the same place. Instruction may be synchronous or asynchronous. Distance education may employ correspondence study, or audio, video, or computer technologies." Online courses offered by Wayland represent a subcategory of this definition, for they are not correspondence courses. An online course is a formal educational process conducted via the internet. Instruction includes synchronous or asynchronous interaction between the instructor and all students in the course, between the instructor and individual students, and among the students.
