Class Absences
Wayland Baptist University expects students to make class attendance a priority. Each faculty member is expected to provide a written copy of the attendance policy to students at the beginning of the course.
Students who are in programs for which an outside agency (such as the Veteran’s Administration) is involved will be subject to the attendance requirements of that agency. The registrar’s office will provide a list of these students and the agency’s requirements to the students and faculty. Adjunct professors will discuss their attendance policy with the Campus Dean or the Division Chair to make sure that the minimum number of clock hours is met.
The Attendance Policy
- Students enrolled at Wayland Baptist University should make every effort to attend all class meetings. All absences must be explained to the satisfaction of the instructor who will decide whether the missed work may be made up.
- Any student who misses twenty-five percent (25%) or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings will receive a grade of “F” for that course.
- For every week of absence during a regular term or an equivalent number of absences during any school term, a student’s final grade may be lowered by one letter grade.
- When a student reaches a number of absences considered by the instructor to be excessive, the instructor will so advise the student and file an Unsatisfactory Progress Report in the office of the Division Chair or the Campus Dean.
- Three tardies may be counted as one absence.
- Additional attendance policies for each course, as defined by the instructor in the course syllabus, are part of Wayland’s attendance policy.
- If an instructor fails to appear or fails to send notification of his or her arrival within the first fifteen minutes of a class period, students may leave without incurring an absence.
- A student may petition the Academic Council for exceptions to the above stated policies.
- Online class attendance will be gauged by participation in the course.
