M.Ed. with Certification
All students pursuing initial teacher certification and the Master of Education (M.Ed.)
degree must have met the university graduate admissions program requirements. Admission to student teaching requires a 2.7 in the last 60 hours of course work. Course work applied toward certification must be a grade of C or higher. A GPA requirement of 2.7 in the teaching field is required with a 3.0 GPA required for the professional education course work.
Students may satisfy, in certain instances, the requirements for both the master's degree
and state certification. Two post baccalaureate certification plans are available - elementary and secondary. Each plan can result in completing a master of education and being eligible to apply for certification. Certification is a function of the states and not one of the university.
Students interested in pursuing a teaching license should indicate their certification interest
on the graduate application form and apply for admission to teacher education. A post baccalaureate certification is designed to provide initial teaching certificate in elementary education or secondary certification (grades 6-12) and will satisfy requirements that are part of the master of education program. The program is a 36 to 39 semester hour certification and Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree program. In addition to graduate programs leading to a Master of Education degree. A post baccalaureate non-degree program is available. This program is designed for secondary teacher candidates. Teacher education standards are established by Teacher Education Councils and the state department of education.
The student must have a major in one of the areas for which Wayland Baptist University
is approved for licensing and must have at least 24 semester hours in the subject area to include 12 semester hours in upper level courses. The Grade Point Average for the last 60 semester hours must be at least a 2.7 GPA and the average in the teaching field must be a 2.7 with no grade below C in the area for which the student is seeking certification. The student seeking probationary certification must pass a state test in the subject area prior to receiving a probationary certification. The post baccalaureate program is individually designed for the student. Courses focus on the areas in which the student is expected to demonstrate proficiency on the state examination. Typically a student is expected to take courses for the Professional Practices portion of the certification test. The courses are designed for the secondary school level certification. In lieu of student teaching, the students must take a nine hour block which includes six hours of supervised internship (EDUC 5350 and 5351) and the beginning teacher induction program - EDUC 5369.

Capstone Experience - All M.Ed. with teacher certification students have two
options for the capstone experience, which include:
1. All M.Ed. with teacher certification students are required to complete
EDUC 5318 - Becoming a Teacher for the capstone. The written portion
consists of passing the practice certification exam with a score of 80 or better. The oral component consists of a presentation of the certification standards to an audience which includes a faculty committee who will evaluate the oral presentation as the final requirement for the M.Ed.
2. Completion of the required state certification examinations will serve as the requirement for the written component. The students will receive a question about an assigned topic for the oral component. The answer will be presented orally to an audience that includes a faculty committee who will evaluate the oral presentation as the final requirement for the M.Ed.

Elementary Education - The program is designed to provide teacher certification
and a Master of Education degree (M.Ed). The states have different testing requirements;
one needs to check with the program coordinators as to what specific tests have to be taken. An oral and comprehensive written examination is required for the elementary education M.Ed. or he student may elect to take the capstone course (EDUC 5318) which is designed to prepare one for the state licensing test and satisfy the M.Ed. degree requirements.

Science. Students must successfully pass the university academic skills test and the appropriate subject field test before being admitted into the post baccalaureate teacher license program. An oral and comprehensive written examination is required for the secondary school certification M.Ed. or the student may elect to take the capstone course (EDUC 5318) which is designed to prepare one for the state licensing test and satisfy the M.Ed. degree requirements.
