Fall 2008 A new Geology major has been approved for implementation at Wayland Baptist University.  This exciting new development will provide new opportunities for students interested in Physical Science.  For more information regarding this new program, please contact Dr. Tim Walsh.  The new geology major will be made available in Fall 2008.
February 22, 2008 As part of our Homecoming Weekend, Sharla McCloskey (WBU Chemistry Alum 2004) will present a seminar at 3:00 PM in MSB room 110.  Sharla will be speaking about her career and post-graduate education in forensic science.  This is a great opportunity for interested students to learn more about this exciting field of applied chemistry.
February 22, 2008 As part of our Homecoming Weekend, Dr. J. Hoyt Bowers and Dr. Gerald Thompson will be honored for their many years of service to Wayland.  This event will be held at 2PM in MSB room 100.  Anyone is welcome at this event.
December 2007 There will be five posters from the Wayland Chemistry Department presented at the ACS National Meeting in New Orleans in April.  Jonathan Carey, Luke Loetscher, Lori Pretzer, Leah Quisenberry, and Stephanie Skiles will present at this national conference. 
December 2007 Five students from the Wayland Chemistry Department will give oral presentations at the Texas Academy of Science Meeting in Corpus Christi in March.  The students involved are:Jonathan Carey, Luke Loetscher, Lori Pretzer, Leah Quisenberry, and Stephanie Skiles. 
December 2007 Congratulations to our December 2007 chemistry graduate, and outgoing SAACS chapter president, Susanna Lucio.
November 2007 The Department of Chemistry at Wayland Baptist University has been re-approved for a three year extension to the Departmental Research Grant from the Welch Foundation.  This extension is for $75,000 over the next three years.  We are profoundly grateful to the Welch Foundation for these funds.  Students interested in undergraduate research in chemistry are encouraged to apply for summer 2008 fellowships.
October 2007 Four posters from the Wayland Chemistry Department were presented at the Southwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society.  Luke Loetscher, Lori Pretzer, Leah Quisenberry, and Stephanie Skiles presented their research in poster format.  Leah Quisenberry was selected as the winner of an Oustanding Undergraduate Poster award.

September 2007 The Annual Cookout for the Division of Math and Science is scheduled for Thursday, September 20th at 6PM at the Moody Science Building.  All majors, minors, and their families are encouraged to attend.  Come hungry!
September 2007 Two research seminars are scheduled for Friday September 7th and September 14th at 1PM.  Stephanie Skiles, Lori Pretzer, Leah Quisenberry and Luke Loetscher will present the results of their summer research projects.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
May 2007 Congratulations to our 2007 Chemistry Graduates:  Philip Carlson and Jennifer Jones.
March 2007 Vanessa Carey, Marcia Peck, Philip Carlson, and Lori Pretzer will be orally presenting their results at the annual meeting of the Texas Academy of  Science in Waco

January 2007 There are two upcoming chemistry seminar presentations:  Dr Gary Gray of Southwest Baptist University will present "Spectrophotometric Determination of Thiocyanate in Human Saliva and Human Tears" on Friday the 19th at 1Pm in MSB 110  On Monday the 22 at 1PM, Dr Steven Tripp from Purdue University will present "Molecular Self-Assembly: Applications for Biological and Chemical Sensing "  Refreshments will be provided
December 2006 The two Welch Summer Research Fellows have been selected for 2007  Congratulations to Leah Quisenberry and Stephanie Skiles and
October, 2006 Vanessa Carey, Marcia Peck, Philip Carlson, and Lori Pretzer along with Dr Reinhart and Dr Boyd will be attending the Southwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society to present the results of their summer 2006 research  This group will present a total of 4 research posters and one oral presentation at the conference  Needless to say, it was a successful summer!  Congratulations to these students
September 2006 The Harold and Audrey Temple Endowed Scholarship Fund Account has been established to honor the Temples service to Wayland and her students since 1976  Dr Temple has announced his retirement effective May 2007  Anyone interested in contributing to this account should contact Dr Joel Boyd or Mrs. Marth Cross for more information

March, 2006 A group of SAACS students travelled with Dr Boyd to the ACS National Meeting in Atlanta  These students attended various seminars and events
February 18-19 The SAACS chapter will be running a snack bar at the Gem and Mineral show at the Ollie Liner Center in Plainview  This event will be a fundraiser for the students attending the ACS conference in Atlanta  See Dr Boyd or Jennifer Jones to sign up for time slots during that weekend
February 6, 2006 The Wayland Chemistry Department will host a meeting of the South Plains Section of the ACS on February 6 at 7:30 PM  The speaker will be Dr C Alton Hassell from Baylor  The presentation will be followed by refreshments provided by the SAACS chapter
January, 2006 The SAACS students are planning on attending the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Atlanta in March  The trip dates will be March 26-Mar 30  Fundraising is underway for this trip  Contact Dr Boyd or chapter president Jennifer Jones for more information

Wednesday, October 12 A group of SAACS students traveled to Lubbock to attend another seminar hosted by the South Plains Section of the American Chemical Society  This presentation was by Dr Jim Marshall of the University of North Texas  The next such seminar will be hosted by Wayland on the 6th of February  The speaker will be C Alton Hassell from Baylor University
Thursday, September 29 The Division of Math and Science will be hosting a Division Cookout at 5:30 PM at the Wayland Bowl  All majors, minors and their families are encouraged to attend

April 27, 2005 The Annual Chemistry Cookout to honor graduating Majors and Minors in chemistry will be held on April 27 at 5:00 PM  The location is 1403 Amarillo  The student affiliates chapter of the ACS is hosting this event  Dinner will be provided Come and go as you please  Final exams begin the next morning!
April 2005 Sharla McCloskey (2004) has been accepted to the Forensic Science graduate program at Sam Houston State University  She will begin this program in the fall  Congratulations Sharla!

October 2004 The Welch Foundation has just awarded WBU's chemistry department a Departmental Research grant for 2005-2008  This funding will enable undergraduate research in chemistry  Students interested in doing research with Dr Reinhart or Dr Boyd should contact them regarding summer 2005 research opportunities.
May 2004 Sharla McCloskey graduated on May 1, 2004 with her BS in chemistry and mathematics.  Congratulations Sharla!
April 2004 Angela Watson received the award for outstanding chemistry student at the annual awards chapel.
April 2004 Sharla McCloskey was awarded the Outstanding Graduating Chemistry Major award at the meeting of the South Plains chapter of the American Chemical Society
January 2004 Instrumental Analysis will be offered Spring 2004 and Spring 2005.  After Spring 2005, it will be offered every OTHER spring.  Students should plan accordingly for this course on rotation.
January 2004 CHEM 2402 will be offered at 4:30-5:20 on MW and CHEM 3479X will be offered at 4:30-5:20 on TR in the spring semester of 2004

November 2003 CHEM 2402 and CHEM 3479 may need to have their schedules altered for next semester.  If you are planning on taking either of these two classes, please contact Dr. Boyd as soon as possible.
July 2003 The PAHSEP Homeschool program will be in its 2nd year in 2003-2004.  This year will include lab programs in chemistry AND physics.  For more information on this program click on the PAHSEP link above.

April 2003 Raelene Trudeau was awarded the Outstanding Graduating Chemistry Major award at the meeting of the South Plains chapter of the American Chemical Society April 17, 2003.
March 2003 Division Scholarship applications are currently available in the division office (2nd floor MSB). All science majors are eligible to apply. Application deadline is Friday, April 4 at 1:00 PM.
February 2003 Raelene Trudeau has been accepted into the Texas Tech Pharmacy Program. Congratulations Raelene!
February 2003 Proposed class schedules for Fall 2003 are available. Students should consult with their advisor soon to avoid potential schedule conflicts with other courses within the division.
February 2003 Dr. Reinhart will be leading a MANDATORY meeting for all those in a pre-health field (except for pre-nursing) on Friday Feb. 21 at 2PM in MSB 205. Be sure to attend, as very important information will be presented.
January 2003 Emily Stewart (BS 2002) has been accepted into the graduate program at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center where she will pursue her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology.  She will begin the program in Spring 2003.  Congratulations Emily!
November 2002 Raelene Trudeau will present her undergraduate research project ( summer program at the University of Oklahoma) entitled "Fun With Antibodies or How I Spent My Summer Vacation" on Friday, November 8th at 12:30 in MSB 110. Refreshments will be provided.
October 2002 A new class, Faith and Science (HONO 1396) will be offered in the Spring of 2003. This class will touch on a wide variety of issues related to the relationship between the Christian faith and modern science and the scientific viewpoint. This class will be taught by Dr. Boyd with input from Mr. Franklin and Dr. Reinhart (and hopefully others). The class will meet TR 3:30-4:45 in MSB 109. Contact Dr. Boyd for more information.
August 2002 The Division of Math and Science at Wayland is pleased to announce a new science laboratory program for high school students who are homeschooled.  The Plainview Area Homeschool Science Enhancement Program (PAHSEP) will begin in September. July 2002 The University of Nebraska at Lincoln has just donated to us a 60 MHz JEOL NMR Spectrometer. This NMR will be a wonderful addition to our instrumental labs and we are very pleased and grateful to UNL
May 2002 The Chemistry Department proudly acknowledges the graduation of three chemistry majors: Ryan Boyd, Emily Stewart, and Diana Trischitti. Ryan is beginning the MBA program at Texas Christian University, Emily Stewart is currently doing mission work in San Antonio and will be enrolling in a biochemistry graduate program in the spring, and Diana is staying at home with her brand new baby boy in Brownfield, Texas. Congratulations to all of these graduates!
