The molecular biology major requires 32 upper level hours including both biology
and chemistry courses. Twenty of these hours are from a set core and 12 hours are selected
from the additional courses listed. Students are encouraged to choose these 12 hours such that
they best prepare the student for their future career goals. *MATH 1306 - Elementary Statistics
is required for all math and science majors. It may be used to fulfill the additional three hours
math requirement in the general education core of the B.S. degree.

PRE-MEDICAL/DENTAL:

The professional schooling for medical and dental students is four years in duration and begins following four years of preparatory work, including the BS degree

Most medical and dental schools prefer students with a broadly based academic background and a strong emphasis in the physical and biological sciences and mathematics The TTHP GUIDE TO HEALTH PROFESSIONS recommends the following science courses for students seeking admission to medical schools in Texas: BIOL 401, 1402, in addition to additional background courses from BIOL 3402, 3403, 3406, 3408, 3409, 4401, 4403, 4404, 4408; CHEM 1401, 1402, 3403, 3404, 4402, 4403; MATH 1304, 1305, 2306; PHYS 1401, 1402

Students must maintain a competitive overall GPA Students are advised to take the MCAT/DAT exam in the summer of their junior year

PRE-MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Most professional programs in medical technology are four to five years in duration including two- to two-and-one-half years of pre-professional course work Students wishing to pursue medical technology as a career may take their prerequisite course work at Wayland and then transfer into a professional level program in their junior year Professional level applications to a medical technology program are required to have approximately 70 semester hours in prescribed sciences and academic foundation courses to be eligible for admission Courses listed below represent the requirements for entrance into most schools of medical technology

Suggested Courses: BIOL 3402, 3408, 3409, and 4401; CHEM 1402, 2402, 3403, 3404, and 4402; ENGL 1301 and 1302; HIST 2301 and 2302; MATH 1304, 1305, and 1306; PHYS 1401 and 1402; POLS 2301 and 2302; PSYC 1301; and SOCI 1301

PRE-NURSING

Professional-level nursing programs leading to RN certification are three calendar years in duration, including approximately one year of pre-professional course work Students with interests in nursing as a career may take their preparatory course work at Wayland and transfer to a school of nursing after one year Approximately 30 hours of course work is required for admission to a Diploma Nursing Program in Texas

Suggested Courses: BIOL 3408, 3409, and 4401; CHEM 1401; ENGL 1301, 1302; MATH 1300 or 1304; PSYC 1301 and 2301

Bachelor of Science in Nursing students will take degree core courses in addition to those suggested for the diploma program Clinical studies will be undertaken at the university granting the BSN

PRE-OPTOMETRY

The following curriculum is recommended by the College of Optometry of the University of Houston Students who follow this curriculum and meet the qualitative entrance requirements of the University of Houston pursue four years of professional study in the College of Optometry beyond the pre-professional courses to receive the degree of Doctor of Optometry

Suggested Courses: BIOL 1401, 1402, 3402, 3408, 3409, and 4401; CHEM 2402, 3403, 3404, and 4402; ENGL 1301 and 1302; HIST 2301 and 2302; MATH 1304, 1305, and 2306; PHYS 1401 and 1402; POLS 2301 and 2302; PSYC 1301 and 3301; and SOCI 1301

PRE-PHARMACY

Pre-pharmacy students should complete 60 or more semester hours of the prescribed work to be eligible to apply for admission to the professional pharmacy program

PRE-PHYSICAL/OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Most of the professional programs in Texas and the adjoining states have been elevated to the masters level Most require a baccalaureate degree for admission Entrance into a professional program is very competitive at this time Even for those few schools that do not require a baccalaureate degree, we strongly suggest that the student complete their degree at Wayland before applying We suggest that a student pursue a degree with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry or a double major Also, two semesters of college physics are required by most professional programs

Suggested Courses: BIOL 2305, 3408, and 3409; CHEM 1401 and 1402; ENGL 1301 and 1302; HIST 2301 and 2302; MATH 1304 and 1305; PHYS 1401 and 1402; POLS 2301 and 2302; PSYC 1301 and 2301; and SOCI 1301
